Going after Croaker - Snippet from Starrella Falls for #WeWriWa #Superheroes

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

I’m continuing the scene from: Starrella Falls, Book 2 in the Secret Supers, until the end of this chapter. Then, I’ll begin to post snippets from Book 3. You can read the first chapters of Starrella Falls HERE.

Background: Estelle and Toby are superheroes and their telepathic animal partners are Rockette, the flying mare, and Growler, the jaguar.
Toby knocks out the wanted murderer, Croaker, and Mark Copper offers to take Croaker to the police station. Instead, Estelle and Toby discover Mark is driving north, probably to Dupree Air Base.
The last line, spoken by Toby, was: “Copper wasn’t after the money. Reckon he’s taking Croaker to the military jail.”

“Is that a problem?” Estelle asked as they walked across the campus.
“Might be safer. Don’t know for sure. Zarnoths are sneaky.”
“What about Rockette?”
“She’s to follow and make sure Copper goes to Dupree.”
Estelle relayed Toby’s instructions, and Rockette snorted, “Growler already told me.”
Toby lengthened his stride until Estelle had to trot to keep pace. He did not stop until they reached the parking lot behind McTartan’s. He patted the handlebars of the motorcycle and looked at Estelle, “I’m going after Copper.”

Destination Switched - Snippet from Starrella Falls for #WeWriWa #SciFi Superheroes

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

I’m continuing the scene from: Starrella Falls, Book 2 in the Secret Supers, for a little longer. You can read the first chapters HERE.

Background: Estelle and Toby are superheroes and their telepathic animal partners are Rockette, the flying mare, and Growler, the jaguar.
Toby knocks out the wanted murderer, Croaker, and Mark Copper offers to take Croaker to the police station. After Mark drives off, Diane accuses him of wanting the reward for Croaker. Toby offers to take Diane and Estelle to their rooms.

Toby said little as they walked along the dark streets, and Estelle decided he was worried about Croaker. Luckily, Diane kept up a lively chatter until they reached her dorm.
Pulling her student card from her purse, Diane said, “Thanks for the escort, Toby.” She swiped the card reader and entered quickly, calling, “Bye guys!”
When the door swung closed again, Toby squeezed Estelle’s wrist and whispered, “Heard from the bird yet?”
“Let me check,” Estelle thrust out a mental summons. A second later, Rockette answered, “Car’s on the highway, driving north; want me to keep chasing it?
“Dupree Air Base,” Toby said, tugging Estelle away from the residence hall. “Copper wasn’t after the money. Reckon he’s taking Croaker to the military jail.”

No nonsense! Snippet from Starrella Falls for #WeWriWa #Superhero #Romance

Background: Estelle recognizes the wanted murderer, Croaker, and Toby knocks him out. Mark Copper offers to take Croaker to the police station while Toby looks after Diane and Estelle. After Mark drives off, Diane accuses him of wanting the reward for Croaker.

Note: Toby is in good spirits since he and Estelle have patched up their differences. They are enjoying each other’s company for the final weeks of the college semester before they part for the summer, or possibly, forever! Ominous drum beats and anxious wait for Book 3!

The final line was: “Ain’t that golden!” Toby sounded amused. “Hope he don’t regret it.”

“That’s the last time I’m going out with him,” Diane grumbled.
“Plenty of other guys at Goldman,” Estelle consoled her friend.
“Don’t squabble over Copper,” Toby said; “Ladies, grab hold.” He offered an arm to each of them.
“Ooh!” Diane squealed, “Best offer I’ve had in ages.”
“Ease up,” Toby said firmly, “No nonsense. I’ll drop you at your dorm; then, I’m driving Estelle to her home.”
Estelle was disappointed. She had hoped to spend the evening with him, but she dared not inquire about his plans when Diane could hear.

Of course, they’re not finished with Croaker. Remember, Estelle’s bonded mare, Rockette, is following Mark’s car, in her pigeon disguise. Also, Toby’s jaguar companion is close by. The animal companions are key characters in this superhero series.

Aurora’s 7 Tips for Naming Characters in Science Fiction Stories #amwriting #Authors

Aurora’s 7 Tips for Naming Characters in Science Fiction Stories.

These tips are designed to make your writing more accessible to readers. Names can also hint about characteristics instead of stating them bluntly, or add comic effects or emotional implications.

Tip 1: The names of main characters must be easy to pronounce in English. You want your stories to be easy for readers to follow.
Exception: Names of aliens when you want to emphasize their differences from normal humans.

Tip 2: The main characters, especially a romantic couple appearing in the same scenes, must have distinct names that do not look or sound similar. Avoid using Pat and Pete, or Jenny and Jerry. Again, following this tip will improve the readability of your story.
Exception: You might have a set of clones with similar names, or twins where you want to add confusion about their identity.

Tip 3: Alien names should look and sound unusual. When the aliens have two sexes, I prefer to use names with feminine or masculine sounds or endings, like Suzzaine (female) or Radekis (male). You may also want to apply a specific convention to aliens from the same world or race. For example, the giant crustaceans from the planet Brululia are called Gullish and Gulpah (gender neutral since this species has five). The Zarnoths in my Secret Supers Series have names beginning with Z or K, like the villain Rigel Zentor and the ambassador Zharkor.

Tip 4: Names can be cues to important characteristics. For example, the giant flower-like planetoid starring in the Grand Master’s Trilogy is called Amarylla to suggest the shape and pink color of an amaryllis flower. Note, Amarylla is also female.
Another example is the Zarnoth assassin, Karockis or Croaker, in my Secret Supers Series.

Tip 5: You can use names derived from different countries or cultures to indicate diversity. There are lists of these types of names on the internet. For example, Srinivasan and Lira Tong are two friends of the heroine, Violet, in the Grand Master’s Trilogy. Lira is also a cat-like humanoid from the planet Aman-el.

Tip 6: You can create unusual names by modifying names of characters or places in real life or from other books. For example, I took the name Athos from the Three Musketeers, and adapted it into Athanor for the Griffin Grand Master.

Tip 7: Keep a list of names you like or you think would make interesting characters.

Ain't that golden! Snippet from Starrella Falls for #WeWriWa #Superheroes

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

I’m continuing the scene from: Starrella Falls, Book 2 in the Secret Supers. You can read the first chapters HERE.

Background: The wanted murderer, Croaker, attacks Estelle and Toby knocks him out. Mark and Diane arrive in his car and Mark offers to take Croaker to the police station. I skipped the part where they searched him and removed a gun and poison darts. After loading their prisoner in Mark’s car, Mark asks Toby to look after the girls.
The final sentence was: “My pleasure!” Toby grinned.

Rockette cooed in Estelle’s mind, “Growler told me to follow the car and tell you where’s it’s going; I’ll be a shadow pigeon.
Be careful!” Estelle warned.
As Mark drove off, Toby swaggered to the girls and drawled, “Hope you don’t mind the walk. Can’t fit both of you gals on my bike.”
Estelle giggled.
Diane frowned at the departing sedan, “Sheesh, he’s done it again! Mark’s skipping out and ditching me.” She groaned, “Bet he wants the reward.”
“Ain’t that golden!” Toby sounded amused. “Hope he don’t regret it.”

Meet the Characters in Secret Supers for SFRB Showcase #SciFi #Romance

Welcome to another SFR Brigade Showcase! Please remember to check out the posts from the other participants at http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html.
Check the end of the post for a Multi-author SciFi & Fantasy Promotion.

Main Characters in my new Secret Supers Series
Plus, a sample of associated characters. I had fun creating their names.

Estelle Wright / Super Starrella is paired with the winged mare, Rockette.
Daughter of Laura and Steven Wright
Undergraduate majoring in Biology, hopes to become a vet
Superpower: fire (activated in an accident, or was it?)

Toby Ryan / Sol Tobarian has a black jaguar with wings, Growler.
Son of Sol Farleon (local clade leader) and Mir Saflorestine (she has been missing since Toby was 12)
Graduate student in Aerospace Engineering, and pretty good at hacking into computers.
Leader of the Jags street gang (the mysterious Secret Supers)
Superpower: strength

Diane Stewart and Veena Chandra: Estelle’s best friends.

Captain Mark Copper, military intelligence, investigating Estelle.

Inspector Horace Parkins, Crime Investigation Division, chief detective in charge of the serial killer investigation.

Trooper Pete Cassidy, young assistant for Inspector Parkins.

Dr. Netta / Mir Celeste, veterinary doctor in charge of activating superpowers, has no superpowers and she’s mad about it.

Gecko, another superpowered human in the Jags gang (named for his super ability), with a hawk, Fricka.

Ice Princess, Farleon super in the Jags gang (guess what her superpower is).

Farleon Elders: Ursol Numion, Ursol Paliar, and Urmir Damoria (book 2)

Villains
Mr. Sunshine / Rigel Zentor, Zarnoth villain in books 1 & 2.

Cramer Jones / Croaker / Karockis, Zarnoth assassin in book 2.

Setting of the Stories
The first two books are set in and around Atalanta, my sunnier, southern version of Gotham City. Estelle lives near my neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. She and Toby are students at one of the local universities. I add a touch of local flavor in the place names, food, native wildlife and flora. They travel to rural farm and villages areas not far from Atlanta, the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains, the coast of Georgia, and a gator-infested swamp in southern Georgia.

In book 3 (WIP), the setting is Oxenford University in England (you know - the place with a 1000 years of academic history), with side trips to London, Avebury stone circle and the south coast of Devon. Aliens and ancient magic!

Blurbs
 Super Starrella

Book 1, Super Starrella
Teen superhero, Starrella, and her flying horse combat vicious killers in the skies of Atalanta.
The quiet summer before her freshman year turns frighteningly weird after Estelle Wright trespasses onto an Army base. Blown into the air and knocked unconscious, she wakes with a nascent superpower. Not to mention a winged horse with a snarky attitude and a mind of her own.
Back home in Atalanta, a serial killer is targeting the students at Goldman University. Before long she must juggle college classes with sneaking out of the house after dark to battle alien monsters. Estelle’s life is in danger, but who can she trust: handsome Captain Copper from military intelligence, or hunky Toby, the tough gangster with a motorbike? Both men have secret agendas, but falling in love is not in their plans.

 Starrella Falls

Book 2, Starrella Falls
Super Starrella faces a bigger challenge and Toby is tangled in alien politics
College freshman Estelle Wright has it all: a superpower, a flying horse, and a hunky boyfriend. All is threatened when her old enemy swears revenge, ruthless killers target Atalanta, and Toby is under pressure to dump her. But, Estelle’s knack of finding trouble scuttles his plans. Their lives are at stake and they face agonizing decisions. The wrong choice will lead to disaster.
