Tribunal by Holograms - Snippet from EUROPA for #WeWRiWa #SciFiRom

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories.

Sorry, I skipped last weekend, but I’ll flip to another scene from my latest novel set on Jupiter’s moon, Europa.

Tag line: Daredevil scientist and scarred alien in perilous alliance

Blurb
Dr. Nikki Bell’s plan to discover intelligent life in the oceans of Europa hits a rocky start when her spaceship crashes on the icy surface. Seconds before she blacks out, she spies a man’s face in the water beneath the ice. When she wakes on the submarine Station, nobody believes her story. Convinced the mysterious stranger saved her life, Nikki searches for him while she explores the ocean and its alien inhabitants.
Kiron Arqin Ramis chose exile as a Watcher on a remote outpost to redeem his family’s honor. He never expected to find an attractive Earther woman close to death. He violates the prime policy by rescuing her. Despite suffering the penalty, he strives to warn her about his hostile leaders.
Nikki’s unexpected meeting with Kiron triggers a chain of disasters in Europa’s perilous oceans. Can the daredevil scientist and scarred Watcher forge a new alliance despite their people’s antagonism?
Book 1 in a new SciFi series, Taxyon Space.

In my last excerpts, Nikki learned about the mysterious disappearance of her predecessor on Bathos and sightings of possible “mermen”. Today, I’ll gie you another glimpse of the hero’s life as a Watcher.

I’ve edited the excerpt to fit. Please excuse my abuse of punctuation.
In a submarine chamber on another quadrant of the ocean, a lone bare-chested man stood in front of four people sitting on low benches arranged in a semicircle. Kiron had been summoned to the tribunal soon after he entered the base. Two of his interrogators were present in person, and two were holograms of individuals viewing the scene from a distant location. The three white-haired elders bore the trident symbol of the Triarchs on their faces; they wore loose white tunics and their feet were bare.
Overwarder Kalpar, a tall man with a stern expression, said, “Underwarder Kiron Arqin Ramis, you are reprimanded for disobeying our rules.” His bicolored hair and matching gold and brown stripes below his left eye signified his membership in the Gold Band Triad.
Standing erect and silent, Kiron wished he had been given time to dress properly; the elders would disapprove of his naked chest. Even the two Triarchs judging him remotely were well able to appraise his appearance via the interstellar quantel. Their holographic eyes fixed on him in a deliberately unnerving manner, although they did not move. His trial was not worth the expense of a live transmission.

  1. I can sense a bit of the growing tension. So what happens when they condemn him, eh? ;)

  2. Uh-oh! I wonder what he did that they don’t like?

    1. You missed the start of the story. He rescued Dr. Nikki Bell after her ship crashed on Europa.

  3. Violating prime directives... I'm not surprised they are punishing him, but I have a terrible feeling that this will speak to future disaster for both peoples.

  4. Poor Kiron, sounds like an unnerving session indeed. Enjoyed the excerpt though!

  5. Are they going to dress him down any farther? Sorry, couldn't resist. No good deed goes unpunished but my guess is, he's already met his reward. That last line doesn't bode well . . .

    1. Note, he's bare-chested because he's been swimming. It's a dangerous reward!

  6. I feel bad for the guy, but I also have to admit this was a super cool scene!

  8. Interesting how he's worried about his attire when he's in deep trouble. Nice!

    1. His lack of proper attire will annoy his superiors. It indicates the importance of correct formal etiquette in their society.

  9. There's a lot of world building going on in this scene. He's pragmatic, accepting he's not important enough for two of his judges to even be present. And the way he stands, erect and respectful, I'm sure not being allowed to dress properly bothered him. Great snippet!

    1. Thanks. He would prefer to be properly dressed, but it's too late and he'll have to suffer the consequences of his actions.
