Fake smiles - snippet from RISHALT for #WeWriWa #SciFiRom

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I’m posting snippets from Rishalt, Book 2 of Taxyon Space.

Blurb
Kiron Arqin Ramis is summoned home by his family to the unwanted honor of a new triad and union with a high-ranked female. Unable to forget Nikki, he endures a perilous exile on a wilderness planet instead of complying with his family’s demands. But, the Triarchs have other plans for him.
Stakes are higher than the lives of two individuals. Earth leaders are desperate to acquire the aliens’ interstellar technology, while Warrish dispute the benefit of an alliance with inferiors. Can Nikki and Kiron pierce the barriers separating them to find happiness with provoking an unequal war?

Kiron has been summoned home by his family. In last week’s snippet, he entered the spaceport on his home planet, Rishalt.
You can read last week’s snippet here –
The last sentence was: “Permit me to guide you to the greeting chamber where your esteemed family awaits your presence.”

“You may point me in the correct direction,” Kiron suggested mildly; doubtless the overzealous official would miss the hint. He had no desire to be on Rishalt, nor to meet his relatives. He had hoped to be free to visit Nikki, his Earther lover on Europa, but ignoring the family’s summons was unwise.
As Kiron guessed, the obsequious official merely gestured to a door on the side wall, and followed at a discreet two paces. He trotted ahead to open the door, and bowed again, “Please enter the greeting chamber, Brin Arqin Ramis.”
Halting at the sight of the hexad of elders in formal garments, Kiron swallowed a groan. His birth parents and their triad sisters and brothers had come to meet him. They confronted him, their faces plastered with fake smiles. Only his mother’s smile looked genuine. Mother Nadira had been the only one of his parental hexath to message him on rare occasions during his four years on Europa.

  1. Oh glory, I wouldn't want to be there, either. "Sorry, Dad, caught a cold. See you next decade." Good snippet, Aurora. :)

  8. Sounds like a complicated family re-union in more ways than one. His feelings of unease and the fact he wishes he were someplace else - with someone else - come through very clearly!

  9. Well I can tell this isn't a good development! Probably going to get worse for him too, I'm guessing. But made for a very intriguing snippet!

  13. It sounds like that bunch just want to make rules for him without even bothering knowing him. I wonder why they expect him to obey.

    1. He must conform to traditional society rules or become an outcast.

    2. That's so bothersome. Though I don't think he would be and outcast everywhere. ;)

    3. He wouldn't exactly blend into human society with green skin and six fingers on each hand, never mind the gills.
