Fricka the Hawk - Snippet from #Superhero story for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I’ve switched to snippets from an unpublished short story in my superhero series. It was originally intended for an anthology that didn’t receive enough submissions. I’m debating whether to expand it into a novella or make an anthology with other short stories. Any suggestions are welcome.

The story continues this weekend.

Postponing their dinner date was a nuisance, but she loved any excuse to fly on Rockette and use her superpower. Even the idea heated the palms of her hands. She clenched her fists to hide the tiny flames.
The pigeon griped, “Don’t know. That bossy cat never spills details.” Flapping to a tree beside the path, she added, “Fricka’s been searching for Gecko’s little sister.”
We’ll find out soon enough,” Estelle slowed as she rounded the corner to the quiet patio at the rear of the Student Center. A hawk perched on the flat roof; Fricka keeping watch while her partner was at the meeting.
Toby and two of the gang were sitting at a table under a crape myrtle tree laden with large magenta blossoms and out of earshot of idle listeners.

Learn how Estelle gained superpowers and a flying horse by reading Super Starrella, Book 1 in the Secret Supers Series

Reviewers say:
“A boring holiday on a quiet farm livens up for Estella when she is caught in an explosion and develops super powers and acquires a companion - a flying horse. 2 good-looking suitors, her first year at college, and a mysterious super-villain make for a fun read.”

I really enjoyed reading this story. It was unique, engaging and easy to read.

Change of Plan - Snippet from Short Story for #WeWriWa #Superhero

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

This weekend, I’m switching to snippets from an unpublished short story in my superhero series. It was originally intended for an anthology that didn’t receive enough submissions. I’m debating whether to expand it into a novella or make an anthology with other short stories. Any suggestions are welcome.

Here are the first lines (unedited).

Her bookbag slung over a shoulder, Estelle Wright hurried out of the classroom. She maneuvered through the bustling corridors of the Bioscience building, relieved her mid-term was over, and eager to celebrate with her boyfriend.
Toby Ryan was not waiting by the exit.
She looked around for Rockette.
A speckled pigeon swooped over her head, and landed on the low wall alongside the steps. Rockette, the flying horse, was in her covert form.
Change of plan,” the pigeon squawked, “Toby’s got a job. Meet him behind the cafeteria.”
Estelle smiled; she had shared a telepathic bond with Rockette ever since the infusions of alien DNA had given them superpowers. “Okay, what’s the job?” she asked, switching direction to march along the path crossing the lawn of Goldman University.

Crafty as ever - Snippet from COSMIC WARS for #WeWriWa #SciFi Fantasy

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

This weekend, I’m continuing a scene from my latest release, Cosmic Wars, Book 5 of the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. The Griffins, Violet, Athanor, and their son, Varan, are at home when their dragon friends visit with their baby, Istros.

The final line was: The adult dragons watched in silence as the children played.
[Apologies for minor misuse of grammar to fit in 8-10 sentences.]

In a voice like silver bells, Istrelle sang eloquently, “These Vrons have earned our friendship; Violet saved your life and brought us together. We cannot allow harm to befall them; friends are worth more than one or two loose scales.” She curled her slender neck around the Black Dragon’s shoulders.
Snorting in sudden amusement, Ythris croaked, “Crafty as ever, Zyzost Griffin; you play with our sons to claw us into unity.”
“No craft is needed,” Athanor remarked, “Violet can tell you how often I entertain Varan.”
“It’s true;” Violet patted his bent back and chuckled; “Athanor spends his leisure hours romping with our son.”
Stretching to his full height, and towering above the Grand Master, Ythris croaked, “When you next visit my eyrie, I’ll give you a choice of shed scales, mine and Istrelle’s.”
His expression serious, Athanor said, “By Ishtare’s favor, we’ll visit soon. The Nulls might strike at any time.”

Convenient Distraction - snippet from COSMIC WARS for #WeWeiWa #SciFi Adventure & Romance

You can read last week’s snippet here – https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2018/07/a-taboo-snippet-from-cosmic-wars-for.html

Its final line was: The dragons’ flare of emotions made Violet hesitate; had she overstepped a boundary?
[Apologies for minor misuse of grammar to fit 10 sentences.]

“For hundreds of years,” Ythris hissed, “dragons were hunted for their shining scales.”
“I’m sorry,” Violet said, “Is that why dragonlords restrict access to Sythos?”
“One reason,” The Black Dragon whipped his tail, knocking stones off the stream’s bank.
Keeping his tone calm, Athanor said, “I asked Stimon if he could devise an unbreakable container for the silver psi-enhancing liquid. The Nulls’ sonic weapon cracked the casing on our rings, and we lost the protective influence.”
Ythris remained guarded, verging on hostile, yet Violet sensed Istrelle’s attitude softening toward them.
Conscious of the dragons’ mixed emotions via his link with Violet, Athanor shrugged, “No matter; we will not break trust with you.” Apparently unconcerned, he knelt by the gurgling stream and showed the children how to make a boat from a leaf. Little Istros was fascinated by the floating leaf, and poked it with his claws; Varan demanded a second leaf, and dropped it into the stream.
The adult dragons watched in silence as the children played.
