Brave Kitty! Snippet from Grand Master's Cat for #WeWriWa #SciFi

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

Since several of you were worried about the fate of the kitten in last week’s snippet, I’ll continue the scene from my short SciFi prequel, Grand Master’s Cat.
The kitty “saved” the Grand Master from the sting of a giant scorpion.
The final sentence was: Tottering under the psi blast, the scorpion staggered two steps and collapsed onto the desert sand.

The Grand Master chopped through its neck with a laser-sharp ray, and left his attacker. He ran to the cat, amazed that such a small animal had the courage to attack the giant scorpion. He lifted the limp kitten and ruffled its fur, searching for wounds with his psi probe. When he moved its left foreleg, the kitten whimpered. Sensing the mineral of the bones, the Griffin located a break. He sat beside the kitten and crooned to it. This simple fracture was within his ability to repair by sealing the gap in the bone.
While his psi energy bathed the tiny limb, the friendly cat rubbed its head against his hand and purred. Astonished by the cat’s lack of fear at his psychic emanations, he whispered, “Brave kitty!” The cat mewed and licked the Griffin’s fingers, apparently enjoying the tickle of psi power.

Kitten Attacks Alien Killer in Snippet for #WeWriWa #SciFi Plus #Giveaway

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

This weekend, I’m skipping to another fun story for the snippet. My short SciFi prequel, Grand Master’s Cat is free though Sunday.

 Cat

The Griffin Grand Master is investigating two crashed spacecraft on an uncharted and dangerous planet.

A hissing growl alerted the Grand Master to a new threat. He dodged aside and twisted to face his adversary, a sand-colored scorpion twice the length of his arm. The stinger missed his head, deflected by a small orange cat with its teeth fastened onto the segmented tail. The vicious creature whipped its tail from side to side, the fluffy orange animal dangling from the end. Losing its grip, the kitten dropped into the stony ground. The venomous tip stabbed at the fallen cat. The Grand Master thrust out his fist, blasting blue fire. Tottering under the psi blast, the scorpion staggered two steps and collapsed onto the desert sand.

New Release - Scavenger Vanishes by Liza O'Connor #SciFiRom

Scavenger Vanishes
By
Liza O’Connor

While the food at the General’s table is more expensive and cooked by the best chef at the fort, Alisha hates it all the same. There are no peaceful moments at the General’s table.  Powell is always yelling at someone or slamming his fist upon the table causing wine glasses to leap into a salute and then fall over.
Alisha much prefers a Philly cheese steak served to the masses of hungry soldiers in the mess hall. It tastes delightful, and the company is far more fun. She misses the camaraderie and often wishes to be a captain again. Being a colonel hasn’t been any fun at all!

Scavenger Vanishes
By Liza O’Connor

Blurb
Stationed on opposite coasts, Alisha and Logan must each face their own demons and challenges. On the West Coast, Alisha loses her rank for butting heads with General Powell and soon discovers the life of a private can be utter hell. On the East Coast, newly promoted General Logan discovers his soldiers do not recognize his authority to command. In an effort to retake control of the East Coast Corps, Logan authorizes unthinkable actions. When Alisha faces a life-threatening crisis, will Logan rise above his own troubles, or will she discover love and rescue with her best friend Jack?

EXCERPT
As Jack and Alisha left the mess hall and walked toward the assembly hall, he spoke softly, “Alisha, take my advice and don’t push the general any further.”
“I had no choice.”
“You do have a choice,” Jack asserted. “And he’s very close to cutting you down to a buck private.”
Alisha shrugged. At least then she would enjoy some good company at lunch. “Is he still planning to hand out all those demerits?”
“He is,” Jack replied. “And he expects you to stand up on the stage beside him, providing your silent support.”
“Well, he’s delusional,” Alisha replied, and stormed into the assembly room to search out the general.
Powell was already on the stage with his lists of demerits. Alisha ignored his angry demand as to where she had been for the last three hours. “Sir, if you insist on giving the soldiers demerits, which are in my opinion fully unwarranted, then I am left with no choice but to insist, as their co-field commander during the battle last night, all demerits be leveled against myself.”
“Alisha, we’ve already had this discussion,” the general warned.
“Yes, sir, but I must do what I can to limit the demoralizing effect your actions will have. These men clearly do not deserve demerits. According to Reg 6.98, it is my obligation as their commanding officer to take responsibility for their actions while under my command. The footnotes to this reg state that ‘taking responsibility’ can encompass the transfer of disciplinary punishments.”
“Alisha, that reg is used by generals to punish bad captains…”
“That may be your use for it, but I checked with MAC. Any demerits you give these men today will go to me. There’s nothing you can do to stop it,” Alisha assured him.
The general glared over her shoulder at Jack. “I suppose you put her up to this?”
“He did not!” Alisha snapped. “Jack and I have not discussed Reg 6.98. In fact, Jack’s advice was for me to fall in line and support you.”
“Which you’re clearly not planning to do.”
“No, sir,” Alisha admitted.
“Well then, get off my stage,” he snapped.
“Gladly, sir,” she replied, and joined the ranks of Ryders gathering for the debriefing.

We are not betrothed - Snippet from #SciFiR Romance Comet Tales for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

I am continuing a scene from an older story, my space operetta, Captured by the Hawk. This story is included in my latest release, Comet Tales.

Tag line: Spaceships crash across the galaxy in the comic misadventures of spy Grey Kat and pirate Black Hawk.
After stealing secret codes from the Emperor's Revenge, Grey Kat was caught by Black Hawk’s crewmen and taken onto his spaceship. Captain Hawk has just recognized her face. She is Mistress Trina Sligo, daughter of the Solarian ambassador, Master Fingal Sligo.

He stiffened suddenly and his eyes narrowed in suspicion, “Are you not betrothed to the Emperor’s younger son?”
Trina shrugged dismissively. Clearly, Black Hawk disliked the fawning prince. She shared his distaste. “We are not betrothed,” she stated with a strong emphasis on the word “not.” Perversely, she found the masked Hawk a hundred times more attractive than the young prince with his cosmetically enhanced features. She explained, “Prince Alvin courts Mistress Sligo assiduously. It gives her easy access to the Emperor’s palace and much of his imperial sector.”
“I do not trust the Emperor,” he murmured, “and it seems, neither do the Solarians.”

 Comet Tales

Comet Tales is an anthology of 4 short stories and the novella, Captured by the Hawk.
Trudge over the rocks of Mars, trek through a hazardous alien jungle, or pop across the galaxy in a pirate ship in five fun tales of adventure and romance.

The first books in my two longer series will be 99c this month to celebrate their new covers.

Trina Sligo in Snippet from Comet Tales for #WeWriWa #SciFi Space opera

Captain Hawk first sees her in her grimy dock thief disguise. He is suspicious, but sends her to a surprisingly luxurious cabin where she washes her dyed hair and dirty face, so she looks very different when Black Hawk next sees her.
The last line was: Black Hawk circled her again, insisting, “I know your face.”

He halted in front of her, staring at her face with narrowed eyes. She remained motionless and silent, only her eyes sparked with insolence.
“Wait,” he cried, with a confident glow in his green eyes, “I have it! You are Mistress Trina Sligo, daughter of the Solarian diplomat.”
She made a slight bow, and said, tilting up her chin with a mocking, regal air, “You are correct, Captain Hawk. In this guise, I am Mistress Trina Sligo.”
“Amazing!” he said appreciatively, shaking his head. “No one would ever guess that you were the dock thief, Grey Kat.”
She smiled thinly, wondering how long he would stare at her.
