My Next Novel is Set on Europa #SciFi #amwriting

Facts about Europa

Sixth moon of Jupiter.
Fourth largest moon of Jupiter.
A little smaller than Earth’s moon.
Surface layer of ice over an ocean of water and iron-nickel core.
The thin atmosphere of oxygen.
These aspects suggest there may be life on the moon, probably in the ocean.

The moon orbits at a distance of about 400,000 miles from Jupiter
It orbits Jupiter in about 3.5 days with the same side facing the gas planet like our moon.

Europa is named for one of the lovers of the Greek god Zeus.
Zeus took the form of a white bull when he abducted her.

Here is a NASA artist's concept of the landscape of Europa

Does Europa look like a good setting for a science fiction story?

Pain stabbed - Snippet from Cosmic Rift for #WeWriWa #SciFi

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories.

This week, I’ll continue posting snippets from my forthcoming release, Cosmic Rift, Book 4 in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy.

Blurb
Empath Violet embarks on a new and desperate mission to find her missing lover.
Violet’s happy family is shattered when Athanor Griffin vanishes. The formidable Grand Master might have teleported anywhere in the galaxy. Violet strives to find her psychic partner, while looking after their baby and fulfilling his duties on the Council. Her frantic search uncovers a new threat to galactic civilization along with resurgence of the infamous Ixioth slavers. The Council dithers in response to her call for action, and even her former allies believe the Griffin is dead. She must risk her son, her psi-powers, and her life to rescue her beloved mate in the hope they can unite to fight the menace.

Informal Tag line: Even galaxy-trotting heroines need a babysitter.

It ended with the sentence: She hummed to little Varan, alert for his father to pop in at any moment. I've skipped a few sentences.

Judging the time with the precision of habit, she laid Varan in the crib, kissed his mop of dark hair, and tucked the blanket with the blue griffin around him. The two fluffies hopped over the rail and snuggled beside the little boy. She brushed her fingers over their long silky fur. Rascal rubbed against her bare legs and mewed for his share of attention.
Violet!” Athanor’s mental cry pierced her thoughts.
Pain stabbed her temples.
Varan wailed.
Rascal yowled. The fluffies uncurled and twitched their little noses in the air.
Had they heard Athanor or just picked up on her alarm?

Peaceful Family - start of Cosmic Rift for #WeWriWa #SciFi Fantasy Adventure

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories.

I skipped last week due to helping my son move to an apartment. What else should a mother do on Mother’s Day?
This week, I’ll begin snippets from my forthcoming release, Cosmic Rift, Book 4 in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. The mother-son relationship is an important aspect of this story.

First lines
Violet sat in the nursery of the Griffin’s Eyrie, rocking her baby son in her arms and crooning a lullaby. Little Varan smiled at her. At nine months old, the jet black of his short hair rivaled his father’s. His blue-green eyes were solemn, his eyelids drifting lower as he grew sleepy.
The orange cat, Rascal, a furry weight across her shoulders, purred his loud, “Love you, love you.”
The two fluffies curled at her feet like a pair of oversized bunny slippers. Dilly and Dally had identical white noses and silky brown fur, although Dilly had conspicuous white patches on her flanks. Their alien minds mumbled a contented refrain, “Sleep, happy sleep, sleep happy.”
Her usual entourage of bedtime assistants, except for Athanor, her beloved psychic partner. She hummed to little Varan, alert for his father to pop in at any moment.

Informal Tag line: Even galaxy-trotting heroines need a babysitter.

I am still debating how much backstory is needed in Chapter one, since I assume most readers will arrive at this book after reading Books 1-3. If you have read any of these stories, you will meet some of the same characters as well as new alien entities.

Snippet from Secret Supers for #WeWriWa #Superheroes

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

This month, I’m celebrating my third anniversary as an indie author, and releasing a boxset of the three books in the Secret Supers series.
My snippet illustrates the heroine, Estelle aka Super Starrella, and her sidekick, the winged mare, Rockette. They are flying on patrol above the streets of Atalanta (Atlanta).

As they watched a solitary drunkard wobble along the street, Starrella caught a movement at the edge of her vision. In a blur of wings, a huge insect plunged toward the unwary man.
Rockette dived at the flying mantis. Opening her fists, Starrella flung beams of fire at the predator. She scored on its bulky abdomen. It twisted upward, zooming at the winged mare hovering overhead.
Blistering horse flies!” Rockette snorted, kicking her rear hooves at the menacing insect.
Clinging onto the mane as the mare dodged through the sky, Starrella called, “Give me a clear shot at its head.”

Characters in A Tale of Two Colonies #SciFiRom for #SFRB Showcase

Welcome to the SFR Brigade May Showcase!
For this month’s showcase and near the third anniversary of my indie author career, I’ll return to an older book, A Tale of Two Colonies. The idea for this story was conceived a couple of decades ago, although I did not complete and publish the book until 2014. This tale about colonization of an exoplanet with glimpses of different dystopia is now available at several retailers.
Please remember to check out the posts from the other participants at http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html

Blurb
Fight for freedom. Fight to survive - For refugees from an overcrowded Earth, dreams of a better life on an alien planet transform into a terrifying battle for survival.
Nothing will stand in the way of Tiger Lily's dream of escaping the subterranean slums of Terra and visiting the stars. She enters the fierce competition for a place in the scout team on the next spaceship to the remote planet of Delta, where an earlier colony disappeared. Before the ship departs, the arrival of a mysterious message from Delta suggests that the descendants of the first colonists may have survived.
A risky mission to seek the lost colony exposes the scouts to unexpected attacks, and they encounter a grim warrior in the isolated valley. Has Tiger Lily met her match in the tortured man? Is he leading them to safety or further danger? And who are the real rulers of this strange world?

Here is an excerpt with the heroine on the dystopian Earth she will soon leave.
Lily strode through the grimy subterranean passages to her tiny room, flushed with the success of her performance and indifferent to the hunched figures of the silent passersby. She ignored the group of five ragged youths lounging idly at the corner, until they moved deliberately in her direction.
“Out alone!” one man jeered, clearly believing her to be vulnerable.
“We’ll give you a good time!” another man called with vulgar intentions, reaching out to grab her arm.
She swiveled rapidly, punching him below the belt. He collapsed with a moan.
Two others advanced angrily on her. She leaped at them, aiming a vicious kick. Her target crumpled in agony, clutching at his groin. The third man hesitated, unluckily for him. Her fist thudded against his jaw and he sagged to the ground, unconscious.
One of the two youths, who had hung behind well out of the action, shouted, “Watch out! It’s Tiger Lily. I saw her fight in the arena.”
The other man called, “She’s big trouble! Let’s get out of here!”

On the new planet of Delta, her scout team meets the hero and hostile natives.
While the others were resting, Lily wandered off to examine a rocky outcrop where she had caught a glimpse of red among the rocks. When she reached the outcrop, nothing was visible. She paused and stared up at the forbidding grey sky.
Suddenly, her leg was pulled from under her. Screaming, she toppled to the ground. Huge chitinous jaws trapped her leg, dragging her toward a red gaping mouth. She twisted around, wedged her knife between the jaws, and wrestled the blade from side to side, trying to loosen the grip on her leg. A needle-like tail arched down toward her helpless struggling body.
In a rush of air, Conley leaped and slashed his sword through the menacing tail, catching the severed end in his other hand. Standing astride the crumpled body of the dangerous creature, he sliced through its narrow neck.
Lily sighed in admiration. He looked magnificent, like a tall, medieval knight brandishing a heavy sword.
