Treasured Independence - Snippet for #WeWriWa from my Medieval Romance

I can’t believe it’s already June! What are your plans for the Summer?

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I am continuing snippets from my new medieval romance set in fourteenth century England in and around my hometown of Reading.
My heroine Audrey and her cousin Margaret have taken a pilgrimage to Glastonbury Abbey. They have left the Abbey and are walking back to the hostel (an inn for pilgrims). Audrey stops to give a coin to an old beggar woman accompanied by a young girl.

I’ve skipped a couple of lines. Please excuse my minor misuse of punctuation.

With the stable yard in sight, my timid cousin felt safer. She smiled at me, asking, “Do you ever wish for another child?”
Tears filled my eyes, threatening to trickle down my cheeks. Surreptitiously, I wiped my knuckles over the corners of my eyes. “Oh Margaret,” I said, “children are both joy and sorrow in my experience. If I had another child, I would dread losing them.”
“You’ll need a new husband first. Have you thought of making a second marriage?”
Amused by her down-to-earth question, I assured her, “I’m happy with my life as a widow.” In truth, I treasured my independence and had no desire to submit to a husband’s will.

I have a special sale for June.

Bridda's Blessing - Snippet from Medieval Romance for #WeWriWa

Happy Memorial Day!

Paupers line the path, begging for alms. Audrey stops to give a coin to an old woman accompanied by a young girl.

You can read last week’s snippet here – https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/05/a-pang-of-sorrow-snippet-from-medieval.html
Please excuse my minor misuse of punctuation.
The old woman speaks first:
Her voice cracking with sincerity, she said, “Good and gracious lady, I give thanks for your kindness. May the sweet Lord Jesu watch over your travels, may you bear healthy children by St Mary’s grace, and may gentle Lady Bridda grant your dearest wish.”
A shiver of excitement raced along my spine at this strange mix of blessings, including the invocation of the unfamiliar Lady Bridda in parallel with Christ’s holy name. The weight of their potency washed over me like a shower of sweetly scented rose petals. Bowing to the old woman, I thanked her from the depths of my heart.
The other beggars began to shuffle closer, hoping for fresh ears for their pleas and generous hearts.
Nudging my elbow, Margaret urged in a shaky whisper, “Audrey, let’s walk on; we can’t give alms to everyone.”
“No; just this one destitute woman.” As we turned away, I sighed, “The girl reminded me of Ellen.”
“Her hair is the same flaxen color,” Margaret agreed.

Note: Bridda’s blessing introduces a fantasy element, although Audrey doesn’t realize at first.

Draft Blurb:
In fourteenth century Britain, Dame Audrey enjoys her independence as the widow of a cloth merchant. When a dying traveler shows her a gold brooch with a green dragon, she swears to find its true owner. Her search attracts trouble from thieves of all ranks and the attentions of a handsome bailiff, Selwyn Drake. She has no desire to submit to a husband’s will, but the town merchants have other ideas. They covet the young widow and her prosperous business and plan to force her into wedlock. Can Audrey evade the schemes alone or must she accept Selwyn’s help to survive the greedy ruffians and fulfill her oath?

A Pang of Sorrow - Snippet from Medieval Romance for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I am continuing snippets from my new medieval romance set in fourteenth century England in and around my hometown of Reading.
You can read the first lines in last week’s snippet - https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/05/what-about-medieval-romance-with-touch.html
My heroine Audrey and her cousin Margaret have taken a pilgrimage to Glastonbury Abbey. This week, I have skipped a few paragraphs describing their devotions in the cathedral. They have left the Abbey gates and are walking back to the hostel (an inn for pilgrims). On the way, they run the gauntlet of beggars again.
Please excuse a minor misuse of semicolons to fit 10 sentences. Also, note this version is an early draft and unedited.

As our party approached the hostel where we had lodged, I caught sight of an old woman holding the hand of a small child. They stood apart from the majority of beggars; their dresses were neat, although frayed at the sleeves. The woman’s wrinkled face had a resigned expression; her blind eyes stared straight ahead and she leaned on a stick. The child was a fair-haired girl of perhaps five years of age, the same age as my dear Ellen when the Lord took her from me. A pang of sorrow pierced my heart and I resolved to give this woman a silver coin.
Beckoning to the blind woman, I said, “Old mother, come closer.”
She did not react, but the child fixed forlorn eyes on me and tugged at the woman’s hand. With the child’s encouragement, the woman hobbled forward, tapping the ground with her cane at each step.
I held out my hand with two silver pennies on my palm.
Releasing her grip on the child’s small hand, the old woman touched my fingers lightly and felt her way to the coins; she curled her fingers around the gift, and bent in an awkward curtsy.

Draft Blurb:
In fourteenth century Britain, Dame Audrey enjoys her independence as the widow of a cloth merchant. Her demure dress hides a fiery and compassionate spirit. When a dying traveler gives her a curious brooch with a green dragon, she vows to find its true owner. The strange jewel attracts trouble from thieves of all ranks and the attentions of a handsome yeoman, Selwyn Sage. She sees no advantage to a second marriage, but the unmarried merchants have other ideas. They covet the young widow and her prosperous business and plan to force her into wedlock. Can Audrey evade the schemes alone or must she accept Selwyn’s help to survive the greedy ruffians and fulfill her oath?

What about a Medieval Romance with a Touch of Fantasy? #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I apologize for my absence for the past few weeks. Besides the usual dilemma of which story to write next, real life events, both good and bad, intruded on my writing. These events included: end of semester exams, my son’s graduation from college, and my husband’s surgery. I’m trying to get back into the routine of writing every day.

In an amusing switch from science fiction, I had an idea for a medieval romance and a survey of my newsletter subscribers encouraged me to write the story. It is set in fourteenth century England in my hometown of Reading, and will include an element of fantasy. the photo shows the twelfth century church of St. Mary's with its distinctive tower of checkered stone.

So here is an early draft of the first lines of this story. What you think about the concept?

In late summer of my twenty-third year, I made a pilgrimage to Glastonbury in Somerset, thereby proving my piety and enlightening my mind. Our parish priest often advised a visit to a holy shrine as penance for sinful thoughts, especially for a widow like me. Regardless of the state of my soul, a pilgrimage suited me since I delighted in traveling to new places. Both my business and private affairs benefited from the direction and timing of the trip from my house in Reading.
Our group of pilgrims mounted on sturdy horses made the journey in five days of easy riding in the clement weather of early July. We were instructed to leave our horses in the stable yard and walk along the final path to the Abbey gates. Beggars crowded on either side of the paved road, stretching out their hands and pleading for alms. Once, two lads ran into the road and tugged at the sleeves of an elderly merchant. He shook them off and shouted for help. The Abbot’s men at arms unsheathed their swords and shoved the boys away; no others dared approach us.

Week 2 of my Fifth Anniversary Celebration #Indie #Author - Plus Bargain-priced Book

 Secret Supers

For the second week of my anniversary celebration, I’m showcasing my superhero series, Secret Supers

This superhero adventure and romance is set in contemporary At(a)lanta, USA, and Ox(en)ford, UK. The main characters are students at the local university. Estelle Wright is a freshman when she acquires a superpower and a flying horse. I had fun mixing scenes of “normal” college life and visits to neighboring locations with attacks by unnatural killers. Also, the flying horse, Rockette, channels Captain Haddock of Tin Tin for sarcastic remarks and curses.

Read why I wrote the series HERE.

Super Starrella, Book 1  - only 99c this week!
Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3
Secret Supers, Boxset of Books 1-3, usually cheapest option
