Master Stimon's work - snippet from COSMIC LOCK for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

I’m posting snippets from the beginning of my new story, Cosmic Lock, the 6th book in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. This series stars Violet Hunter and Athanor Griffin. In the Cosmic Trilogy, books 4-6, they are both Grand Masters with immense powers, including teleporting interstellar distances. They had left their 13-month old son, Varan, in the care of their old tutor, the White Mother Tingu, while they crossed the Cosmic Rift to rescue some abducted children.
When Violet goes to fetch Varan, she finds Tingu’s cottage in flames and fears her son is dead. Her partner, Athanor, wakes her from a faint and says he cannot detect dead bodies in the shell of the burned cottage.
The last line was: She gripped his forearm, crying, “Have the Nulls stolen our son?”
Notes of explanation for readers new to this series: Hanuman is another Grand Master and their ally. Master Stimon is the dwarf smith with a forge in the volcanic cone.
We continue, with apologies for minor changes to fit -
“If they did, they can’t have gone far. By Tyche’s fortune, two people escaped and alerted Space Corps before the Nulls blocked the main portal on Avalon. I received the alarm sent to summon a Grand Master; when I arrived, Nulls and Ixioths were rounding up the townsfolk. Hanuman popped in soon after, and we dealt with the invaders quickly; I believe Tingu had time to escape with Varan.”
A faint hope lightened Violet’s misery and she whispered, “But where?”
Instead of answering, he pointed to the northern horizon. Billowing black clouds loomed over the snow-covered peaks, and fiery lava fountained above the black cone of the volcano; great swathes of forest were burning on the slopes of the mountains.
Athanor said, “The volcano erupted shortly after I arrived in the town. Its spume of lava destroyed the Nulls’ shuttle and it crashed on the slopes.”
   “Master Stimon’s work?”

 Lock

Draft Blurb
Grand Masters Violet and Athanor Griffin return from beyond the Cosmic Rift with two shiploads of rescued children and escaped slaves, but their enemies have not been idle in their absence. Avalon is in flames and their little son is missing. Finding him may be the easiest problem for the powerful couple. They must unite the fractious Grand Masters, stop the bloodsucking Ixioths from enslaving sentients, and seal the Rift to prevent new incursions of the vindictive Nulls. Can they overcome the challenges and secure peace for the galaxy?

You can read last week’s snippet at https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2020/02/the-abyss-beckoned-snippet-from-cosmic.html
The final line was: She teetered on the edge of a black precipice; the abyss beckoned; she fell.
[Please excuse slight misuse of punctuation to fit.]
A gruff voice called, “Violet, my sweetest love, wake up.”
For a bemused second, she stared at the grim face looming over her. Framed in long black hair, his eyes glowed an eerie blue, while a hooked nose and jet-black eyebrows enhanced the fierce mien of Athanor, her lover and psychic partner. His loving concern flooded across their mental link.
Restored to full consciousness, she sensed the dread forced to the recesses of his mind. She opened her eyes, and looked at the cottage; the fires had died out, but the thatched roof was demolished, leaving the shell of four blackened walls and empty windows.
Tears streaked her cheeks and she sobbed, “Varan’s gone; nobody’s in there; nobody alive.”
Simmering with repressed rage, Athanor grated, “When your mind blanked, I blasted the Nulls and ported to you. The cottage is wrecked, but I detected no trace of corpses when I scanned the interior.”
She gripped his forearm, crying, “Have the Nulls stolen our son?”

The Abyss Beckoned - Snippet from COSMIC LOCK - Science Fantasy for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with WeekendWriting Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

Thanks for your encouraging comments on the beginning of my new story, Cosmic Lock, the 6th book in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. I have already added a little to explain the characters. Even though I expect most people to have read the earlier books in the series, a reminder might be useful.
This series stars Violet Hunter and Athanor Griffin. In the Cosmic Trilogy, books 4-6, they are both Grand Masters with immense powers, including teleporting interstellar distances. By this time, their son, Varan, is about 13-months old. They had left him in the care of their old tutor, the White Mother Tingu, while they crossed the Cosmic Rift to rescue some abducted children.

This snippet follows the previous one with minor punctuation changes to fit. Athanor speaks first, or rather transmits a mental message, and Violet replies in the same manner.
Feb 16:
“If you’ll teleport to Tingu’s cottage and secure our son, I’ll reopen the portal.”
“Instantly,” she focused on the familiar white-walled cottage, tapped her enhancer and spun into the eerie whirlwinds of the quantum vortices.
She popped into normal space by the white picket fence; the gate swung on its hinges, squeaking in a blustery gale. Dense gray smoke and orange flames exploded from the thatched roof of the cottage. The roses climbing over the porch had shriveled into ashes, and as she watched in horror, fragments of window glass shattered onto the flagstone path.
“Varan,” she yelled, “Mother Tingu, where are you?”
No reply; only the crackle of fire and hot gusts of wind battering against her body. Had she fulfilled her promise to rescue the children of Cinerea at the expense of her son’s life?
Despair darkened her mind; her baby son was dead, burned by the fire. She teetered on the edge of a black precipice; the abyss beckoned; she fell.

Flames - snippet from Cosmic Lock for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with WeekendWriting Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

Okay, take a deep breath. I’m plunging into my new story, Cosmic Lock, the 6th book in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. This science fantasy series stars Violet Hunter and Athanor Griffin. In the Cosmic Trilogy, books 4-6, they are psychically-linked Grand Masters with immense powers. Their son, Varan, is just over a year old and they left him with their old tutor, Mother Tingu, while they were away for a few days.
There’s a dramatic beginning.
(Note, unedited and may change)

   Flames.
A rippling sheet of vivid orange flames filled her vision.
Violet had peeped at her son’s surroundings via their resonating amethysts as soon as she had advised the captain of the watch to expect two friendly ships of escapees from behind the Rift. Instead of Mother Tingu’s pristine kitchen on Avalon, a wall of fire filled her senses.
Stunned and bewildered, her mind whirled with questions. What in the voids was she seeing? Were the flames an afterimage of her violent passage across the Cosmic Rift?
Acting by instinct, she contacted her psychic partner.
Their link vibrated with Athanor’s cry, “Avalon’s under attack; the portal is blocked.”
Trembling in foreboding, Violet cried, “Varan’s with Tingu.”

Don't Think You're Safe. Snippet from #SciFiRom ALARIK for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with WeekendWriting Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

While I sort out my next story, I’ll continue snippets from my newly released SciFi Romance, ALARIK, book 4 in Taxyon Space.
In last week’s snippet, Phoebe met the hero, Alarik, disguised as Rick Kent, a fake mining magnate.
I’ve skipped a section where they chat during the flight, and enter the space ferry. As a VIP, Rick gets favorable treatment and is escorted by one of the ship’s officers. Meanwhile, Phoebe has to wait in line for her cabin assignment.
Please excuse minor changes in punctuation to fit.

When Phoebe entered her cabin, she found two beds but no other occupant. Hoping for the privilege of sleeping alone, she chose one side of the room and unpacked her bags.
   Her com buzzed.
Not recognizing the caller, she hesitated to answer, but deciding it might be important, she activated the com.
No image, only a harsh man’s snarl, “Don’t think you’re safe; we know where you are.” After delivering his threat, the man ended the call.
The Vipers; who else had a reason to frighten her? Phoebe shook with terror; she had not escaped from them - one of the gang might be on the ferry.
Scared to join the other passengers and risk encountering the Vipers’ agent, she stayed in her cabin for the first thirty hours. She studied the information on the ship accessible on the local vidilink and subsisted on water and a nutrient bar from her pack.

Blurb:
Two people fleeing different planets discover a shared destiny.
When an alien spacecraft crashes on Mars, the repercussions sweep throughout the solar system and endanger the fragile new alliance with the Warrish mermen.
Alarik Kenton Tallis, First of his Triad, is forced to infiltrate human society on Earth as a spy to insure his injured brother receives proper medical care. But when his transmissions are detected, he must flee the planet.
On Mars, Phoebe Wong, a veterinary scientist with dubious family connections, is desperate to escape the underworld gangs terrorizing the domed city. She jumps at the chance to join the colonists bound for a distant exoplanet.
Their paths intersect on a space ferry bound for the outer planets. Trouble created by the mysterious spacecraft pursues them to Jupiter. Will they find the answers in the oceans of Europa, the hyperspace gateway to the stars protected by three diverse species?
