Welcome to another Sunday with WeekendWriting Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!
I’m posting snippets from the beginning of my new story, Cosmic Lock, the 6th book in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. This series stars Violet Hunter and Athanor Griffin. In the Cosmic Trilogy, books 4-6, they are both Grand Masters with immense powers, including teleporting interstellar distances. They had left their 13-month old son, Varan, in the care of their old tutor, the White Mother Tingu, while they crossed the Cosmic Rift to rescue some abducted children.
When Violet goes to fetch Varan, she finds Tingu’s cottage in flames and fears her son is dead.

The final line was: She
teetered on the edge of a black precipice; the abyss beckoned; she fell.
[Please
excuse slight misuse of punctuation to fit.]
A gruff voice called, “Violet, my sweetest love, wake up.”
For a bemused second, she stared at the grim face looming over
her. Framed in long black hair, his eyes glowed an eerie blue, while a hooked
nose and jet-black eyebrows enhanced the fierce mien of Athanor, her lover and
psychic partner. His loving concern flooded across their mental link.
Restored to full consciousness, she sensed the dread forced to
the recesses of his mind. She opened her eyes, and looked at the cottage; the
fires had died out, but the thatched roof was demolished, leaving the shell of four
blackened walls and empty windows.
Tears streaked her cheeks and she sobbed, “Varan’s gone; nobody’s
in there; nobody alive.”
Simmering with repressed rage, Athanor grated, “When your mind blanked,
I blasted the Nulls and ported to you. The cottage is wrecked, but I detected
no trace of corpses when I scanned the interior.”
She gripped his forearm, crying, “Have the Nulls stolen our
son?”
Draft Blurb
Grand
Masters Violet and Athanor Griffin return from beyond the Cosmic Rift with two
shiploads of rescued children and escaped slaves, but their enemies have not
been idle in their absence. Avalon is in flames and their little son is
missing. Finding him may be the easiest problem for the powerful couple. They
must unite the fractious Grand Masters, stop the bloodsucking Ixioths from
enslaving sentients, and seal the Rift to prevent new incursions of the
vindictive Nulls. Can they overcome the challenges and secure peace for the
galaxy?
Cosmic Lock is on pre-order at Amazon
I hope to release it well before the listed date.

I loved how you used the details of his face to slow her return to awareness.
ReplyDeleteAlso, to remind people who aren't familiar with these characters.
DeleteWell, though it's bad, at least now there's a chance they'll see their son again. I agree with Ed on his facial description while she's waking.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy it's interesting.
DeleteForgot to mention in my comment, we're posting promo spots on the wewriwa.blogspot page. If you'd like one, send me an email with an Amazon link to cypherbuss at yahoo dot com :-)
ReplyDeletethanks!
DeleteGreat use of description! And I like that you gave her some reprieve from anguish, but the conflict still lurks. Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteYes, conflict will be lurking or active throughout the story.
DeleteAmazing conflict happening as we read along. I am enjoying your snippet week after week.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteWell at least he brought some good news! This whole storyline is very intense for sure, definitely one needs to keep reading. Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteYes, the first chapter is intense.
DeleteUh oh - where is the son???
ReplyDeleteTweeted.
That is the current question.
DeleteThank goodness there's the hope their son is still alive. How awful for them both, but at least they are both alive and can continue to search. Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteDrama with a ray of hope!
DeleteGreat description in this intense, emotional scene! I truly hope their son will be okay. Very glad no corpses were found.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I'll have to make sure the trauma carries over to the next chapter.
DeleteYou've wonderfully described the horrible emotions this couple must be going through with the teaser of hope.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteOh, I hope they find their son is safe and well!
ReplyDeleteSoon, although of course not all is well.
DeleteGreat imagery. Their raw emotions are heart-wrenching tinged with a bit of hope that they may still find their son alive.
ReplyDeleteExactly what I hoped to convey.
DeleteVery descriptive, and the fact that there are no bodies gives her some hope.
ReplyDeleteYes, although their enemies have unpleasant ways of treating captives.
DeleteI was hoping Varan had taken the baby and gone into hiding. Good description of him.
ReplyDeleteVaran is the baby. I'm sure the names are confusing if you haven't read the previous books.
DeleteLots of interesting concepts in this snippet. Let's hope their son is still alive.
ReplyDeleteIt is a complex world, especially after five earlier books in the series.
