A Harmless Old Man - snippet for #WeWRiWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors.

Enjoy a little distraction from pandemic worries. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work.

I’m continuing with snippets from the first chapter of a new fantasy story about a witch and an elf. The main character, Bridget Bramble, lives in a small cottage on the outskirts of a village. Her plans to go on a foraging expedition in the woods were interrupted when a troop of armed men marched into the village.

You can read last week’s snippet here: https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2020/11/a-small-army-enters-village-wewriwa.html

Please note, the text is unedited and subject to change.

Elder Grantham stomped onto the road to confront the troop of strangers. Old Grantham called himself the village chief and fancied he ran the place. He raised his hand and asked a question, his words inaudible at this distance.

The men’s leader barked an order.

A man in the front rank punched his fist into Grantham’s face.

The grey-haired old man crumpled, his body thumping onto the road.

Aghast, Bridget gulped. Grantham might be a pompous ass, but what cruel kind of person would mistreat the harmless old man?

A woman screeched inside the adjacent cottage.

And a few more lines:

The intruders, clearly enemies, split into two groups. The first group rushed into the nearest cottages and dragged the occupants onto the road. A second set of men entered the houses and carried out boxes of valuables.

Villagers yelled in anger, or screamed and begged for mercy. The raiders beat off the scant opposition and herded the others into a field.

Draft Blurb

In a land troubled by invasions from the east, Bridget Bramble lives in a small village where she barters herbs and carved buttons. When marauders target her village and murder her family, she flees into the woods. Armed with her Granny’s advice, and a bag of magic buttons, she sets out on the perilous journey to Oakenwald, the fabled land where elves and men live in harmony. As she travels farther from home, she encounters malicious creatures from the worst kind of folktales.

Lost in the foothills of the mountains, Bridget meets an elf, Windswift the Wanderer. He offers to guide her across the mountain range. But what is he doing in human territory? Can an ordinary, or almost ordinary, human girl trust a cold hearted elf?

Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Pet Animals in my Stories: Dame Audrey #Medieval Romance

This story takes place in the late fourteenth century England around the time of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The widowed heroine, Dame Audrey, lives in Redding, the town where I grew up. She runs the cloth shop inherited from her late husband.
Audrey keeps an Irish wolfhound called Rufus. She travels on Daisy, a dappled grey mare. The horse on the book cover looks more like the hero’s steed, Jet. You can read an excerpt at the end of this post.

 Audrey

Young widow seeks true love in this vivid Medieval romance with a touch of fantasy

In fourteenth century Britain, Dame Audrey cherishes her independence as the widow of a wealthy cloth merchant. But some of the wealthier traders covet her profitable business and she fears they will invoke the Abbot’s authority to compel her to marry a man of their choice. Her worst nightmare is suffering under a cruel husband like the hateful jeweler, Henry Goldsmith, who has threatened to curb her lively spirits.
Audrey joins a pilgrimage to Glastonbury to pray for guidance. The holy relics give her no inspiration nor do her fellow travelers. On the homeward journey, she aids the dying victim of a brutal robbery. She wins the stranger’s blessing and a gold brooch with a green dragon. Back in her hometown, the faerie brooch attracts trouble from thieves of all ranks and the attentions of a handsome yeoman, Selwyn Drake. As her nightmare looms nearer, she grows desperate to preserve her freedom.
Can the magic brooch help Audrey evade the schemes to force her into wedlock or must she submit to a husband’s will?

Excerpt: Audrey meets the hero

The four horsemen raced closer.
The second one blew his horn in a second warning.
The foremost rider rose in his stirrups and shouted, “Make way for the sheriff’s men.”
We urged our horses onto the grassy verge to let the riders pass. They slowed their rapid pace to a brisk trot as they approached our party. The leader raised his hand to acknowledge our compliance. His stern face unsmiling, he stared straight ahead, seemingly intent on urgent business.
My Rufus is accustomed to the bustle in the town’s streets. Even so, I bade him lie down in the grass by Daisy’s legs. Excited by the hoof beats, my mare snorted and pranced as the horsemen drew closer. Like me, Daisy was weary of our sedate pace and longed to race alongside the fast riders.
Wary of my frisky mare, the lead horseman glanced at me as he rode past. His glance lengthened into a curious gaze. A sudden smile warmed his severe face and lit green streaks in his hazel eyes.
My heart gave a flutter of delight and I returned his smile.
Rufus woofed.
Daisy whinnied a horse greeting.
The yeoman gave me a quick nod. He pressed his spurs into his steed’s flanks and slapped the reins. His black courser tossed its head and sped into a gallop.
One after the other, his men passed us. An older man with grizzled hair sat astride a chestnut horse. Behind him, a slim, beardless youth rode a lanky piebald mare. In the rearguard, a burly man as brown and shaggy as a bear was mounted on a sturdy bay charger.
Once they passed the vanguard of our party, their horses settled back into an easy canter.
Their leader’s stern face remained etched in my mind. My instant attraction to this handsome yeoman caused me to reassess my options for a husband. I had wealth enough to support a man with none. Yet, if I married a penniless man, I would never know if he most desired me or my riches. A man who could support himself would be best. If ever I decided to marry again and risk losing my independence.
As our company resumed our journey, I watched the figures of the horsemen dwindle into the distance until a dip in the road obscured them from my sight.

A goodly defense - Snippet from #Medieval_Romance DAME AUDREY for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

My latest novel, Dame Audrey, released a month ago, and I’m working on new stories in two different series.
For now, I’ll continue snippets from Dame Audrey, my new medieval romance set in fourteenth century England in and around my hometown of Reading.
In the last few snippets, Audrey met the sheriff’s bailiff, Selwyn Drake, in her parish church and they exchanged sympathy for their lost families. He’s a widower.

I have jumped to the first day of Saint James’ Fair. Audrey, a good businesswoman, is manning her cloth stall.

Please excuse my mis-punctuation to fit 8-10 sentences.
“Good day, Dame Audrey.” Selwyn Drake’s deep, sincere voice elicited a thrill of delight in my wayward mind.
Smiling at him, I said, “Have you come to bargain for my wares?”
His hazel eyes twinkled in laughter, “I have no need of fine laces; rather, I am surveying the stalls to deter robbers.”
“An excellent notion; I chased off two urchins earlier this morning.”
His dark brows compressed in a frown as he stared at the finery displayed on the linen tablecloth next to my box of silver coins, “Do you have any protection against thieves?”
“I am prepared,” swiveling toward the rear of the booth, I called, “Here, Rufus.” My wolfhound uncurled from his sleeping place, shook his fox-red fur, and ambled over to nose at my outstretched fingers. Glancing up at the bailiff, I said, “My dog protects me and my wares.”
“A goodly defense; though not proof against a swordsman,” he held out his hand to the dog.

 Dame Audrey

Sunlit graveyard - snippet from DAME AUDREY for #WeWriWa #Historical_Romance

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

My latest novel, Dame Audrey, released at the end of August, and I’m working on two new stories in different series.
For now, I’ll continue snippets from Dame Audrey, my new medieval romance set in fourteenth century England in and around my hometown of Reading.
Audrey has discovered the sheriff’s bailiff, Selwyn Drake, praying in her parish church. He explained he was praying for his deceased wife and stillborn child.

This snippet begins a few lines later. Two women entered the nave and were staring at Audrey and Selwyn, so he suggested they leave the church.

Once outside the church, I stepped into the sunlit graveyard. The sounds of bartering came from the market across the main street, yet the narrow path winding between the graves was peaceful and private.
Unconsciously, I took my usual walk in the direction of my family’s grave. The names carved in the headstone had been rinsed clean by the rains, although the daisies I had laid at the foot of the mound on Sunday had been washed away.
I paused and placed my hand on the top of the gravestone, “My husband lies here beside our two little children.”
He touched the polished stone and his gaze traveled over the inscription. “You are fortunate; you can pray at their grave. My family’s tomb is far away.”

A sad loss - Snippet from DAME AUDREY for #WeWriWa #Medieval Romance

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

Last weekend, I had the chance to visit Niagara Falls since my husband was giving a talk at a conference. Here is a view of the bridge and the American falls from Goat Island.

My latest novel, Dame Audrey, released at the end of August, and I’ve been working on two new stories in different series.

I have adjusted the punctuation slightly to fit 8-10 sentences.

“Good morning, Dame Audrey,” he said, “I trust you have recovered from yesterday’s assault.”
“The thief didn’t touch me,” glancing at his severe features, I asked,         “Are you visiting the chapel to mourn a friend?”
“By Jesu’s bones, you’ve hit the target; I’ve come to offer a prayer for my wife and child. The eve of Saint James’ Feast is the anniversary of her death. Graziella died in giving birth to our stillborn son; at one stroke, I lost my two dearest kin.”
“A sad loss indeed; when did you lose your family?”
“It has been five years.” He passed a hand over his face as if recalling the tragic event, “I didn’t learn of their deaths for many weeks since I was away with Lord William and fighting in the king’s army. The years have passed swiftly, yet my heart is still burdened with guilt.” He sighed and gazed over the altar into the light-filled rose window.

DAME AUDREY - Her Household, Family and Friends in #Medieval Romance

 Audrey

Dame Audrey - Her Household, Family, Friends and Employees

Few people would live alone. Most householders, even the poorest, would have servants. Servants might be either freemen or bondsmen/slaves. Families and neighborhoods were close-knit.
Dame Audrey’s household includes her cousin and companion, Margaret, and her servants, John and Emily Holt and their thirteen-year old son, Alfred. Her young apprentice, Matthew Cornelius, lives in her house, except for holidays when he stays with his parents. Jacob Cornelius serves as Audrey’s steward and runs the trade when she is away. He and his wife, Hanna, are expert weavers from Flanders.
Audrey has a wolfhound called Rufus, and keeps riding horses for herself, Margaret and John and a packhorse. Traveling alone would be improper for a woman and dangerous for anyone.

Audrey’s widowed mother, Gwen Smith, lives in the village of Pangbourne, about 7 miles from Reading. Gwen has two servants, Elfreda and Kenneth. The local blacksmith in Pangbourne is one of her cousins.

Her sister, Bethany, lives in Redding in the next parish.

Her aunt and uncle, Clementine and Wilfred Woodcote, live by the wharf on the Thames. Wilfred Woodcote is a shipwright. Their sons are William and Colin.

Audrey is friends with Sally, the wife of Edward Faringdon, a mercer. Their children are Philip and Jenna.

Audrey employs the dyers, Roy and Kathleen Kelsey, and the fuller, Nick Fuller, in her cloth trade.

Her Cloth Shop
This picture from Giovanni Boccaccio's 15th Century book gives an idea of the spinners and weavers at work in Dame Audrey's cloth shop. She might be the well-dressed woman at the top, although as a widow, she would have to wear a wimple and veil in public.

A Familiar Figure - snippet from DAME AUDREY #Medieval Romance for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

 DameAudrey

I am continuing snippets from my new medieval romance set in fourteenth century England in and around my hometown of Reading.
Dame Audrey was given a magic brooch by a dying minstrel and instructed to find its owner, the Green Lady of Hawthorns. She has visited the Abbey to ask the archivist, Canon Randolf, if he has heard of this lady. He is keen to acquire the gold brooch for the Church.

The last lines are: Slipping the brooch into my purse, I said in a sweetly pious tone, “By God’s grace, let me pray for guidance; forswearing an oath is a serious matter.”
In this week’s snippet, Audrey walked out before the Canon had time to protest. She has gone to pray in Saint Mary’s Church, a real 12th century church in Reading.
Please excuse my abuse of semicolons to fit. I have also removed some sentences to emphasize the main point.

A familiar figure knelt at a pew near the altar, the auburn-haired bailiff, Selwyn Drake, with his head bowed on his chest.
I tiptoed to the fifth row from the front, dropped onto my knees and bent over my entwined hands. Clasping my wooden cross between my hands, I prayed to the Virgin Mary and her heavenly son; I begged for a clue to lead me to the Lady of Hawthorns. No answer came; God’s words had never sounded in my mind; why should they now?
Several times during my prayers, my gaze strayed to Selwyn’s bright head and broad back. What was he praying for? I hadn’t seen him in the church last Sunday. He might have attended Mass at another local church, although most yeoman favored Saint Mary’s Church because of its closeness to the finest Butts for their archery practice.
When Selwyn rose from the pew, I stood also, and watched as he walked along the aisle toward me; his head was still bowed and he looked even more solemn than usual.
As he approached, I bobbed a curtsy and greeted him, “God be with you, Master Drake.”
