Liftoff - Excerpt from my new Sci-Fi novella for #WeWriWa

 

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors and Snippet Sunday. Sample the work of a new author. Read snippets of stories in different genres.

I’m continuing with snippets from my new science fiction novella. Writing and editing are going well. For now, I’ll continue from last week. The heroine, Josie, has just learned that her planet is in imminent danger of invasion by the Emperor’s fleet. She is accompanied by her crew, Butch and Drin. (You may note certain modern parallels, although my plot predates current events.)

The final lines reveal her decision: She swiveled to face the Star Condor and aimed her forefinger at the sky. “We’re flying. Pronto.”

“Great,” Drin exhaled in a rush of relief.

Josie strode up the short ramp. Within a minute, she and her crew were buckling into their seats on the bridge.

“Wake up, Nina,” she called to the Condor’s AI. “We’re going for liftoff.”

She ran a perfunctory flight check. Speed was essential and she and Butch had done a full inspection only half an hour earlier.

The engines sang as the ship raced along the concrete of the airfield.

An irate voice sounded on the com, “Star Condor, Spaceport Traffic Control here. What are you doing with that ship?”

Ten lines plus a little more:

Josie called, “The Star Condor’s lifting off.”

“No ships can leave the planet. Governor’s orders.”

Hitting the starter, Josie shouted, “We have to deliver a valuable package.”

Under tight control, the ship shot up through the clouds. Nothing on the planet could stop them now.

As the Condor soared above the atmosphere, Josie felt the familiar thrill of escaping the drag of gravity at the planet’s surface.

Seated in the adjacent seat, Drin said, “Hey boss, what is this valuable cargo?” 

“An old vase. It’s my Aunt Gabrielle’s inheritance from my father. The vase is an ancient Solarian artifact, an ugly greenish color, and extremely valuable.”

“Okay.” Drin quirked a grimace. “What’s our destination, boss?”  

“Compute a course for Wick’s Paradise.”

With Thanksgiving coming up, we’re spending the weekend cleaning and painting the dining room ceiling. In December, I hope to bring you snippets from my new story, Alarik, book 4 in Taxyon Space. In the meantime, I’m running snippets from the first book, Europa. This series stars alien mermen, Warrish, who have been secretly observing humans from a submarine base in the oceans of Jupiter’s moon.

Introduction for snippet: Dr. Nikki Bell is exploring the ocean of Europa when she spies six “mermen” hunting sea creatures. She is hiding in a coral forest and recognizes the man who saved her life.

The final sentence was: She clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle a gasp.

His gaze fixed on her and his eyes widened in surprise. His lips twitched into a fleeting smile; a second later, his red brows knotted in a frown. He swiveled around, facing away from her and blocking her view of the fishermen and the net.

Why was he ignoring her? Initially baffled by his rejection, Nikki guessed he had interposed his body to protect her from their sight.

Twisting his left hand behind his back, he made repeated shooing motions. Keep away, she interpreted his gesture.

Much as she longed to speak with him, she heeded the warning. She could scarcely withstand six athletic men armed with harpoons, however primitive they looked. Crouching lower, she slithered farther into the tangled branches until she couldn’t see the clearing.

Nikki froze in alarm; had he spotted her? A second later, he turned away and dove toward the net. She inched back into the concealment of the coral.

A second stranger backed toward her hiding place, and halted in front of the coral branches. A slim waisted man with taut muscles in all the right places, better built than the majority of men on the station. Harpoon raised, the man swiveled slowly and stared into the forest, as if he were on sentry duty. His strip of hair and curled mustache gleamed bright auburn in the dull light. Excitement sizzled through her; that face was etched in her memory - the man beneath the ice, her savior. She clapped a hand over her mouth to stifle a gasp.

I’ve skipped a little ahead, and altered punctuation to fit.

Nikki stared in growing delight. Other people lived in the seas of Europa, people like the man she had seen beneath the ice. Where in styx had they come from? Their humanoid skeletal structures were an anomaly in these dark waters; none of the animals she had encountered had internal bony skeletons nor had her predecessors’ notes indicated the presence of vertebrates.

She inspected the back of nearest stranger from the safety of her hiding place. He bore a tube in a green scaled harness on his back and wore leggings of darker scales; his blue hair stood upright on the top of his head. He turned slightly, revealing a sharp-featured face with tightly spiraled mustache of the same blue as his short hair. Parallel slits ran above his ribs, narrow openings filled with pink filaments - gills, she guessed. Were the gills natural, or a genetic modification, engineered like her hemoglobin for living underwater?

Swinging around, he brandished a harpoon with a cruel barbed tip.
