Characters in A Tale of Two Colonies #SciFiRom for #SFRB Showcase

Welcome to the SFR Brigade May Showcase!
For this month’s showcase and near the third anniversary of my indie author career, I’ll return to an older book, A Tale of Two Colonies. The idea for this story was conceived a couple of decades ago, although I did not complete and publish the book until 2014. This tale about colonization of an exoplanet with glimpses of different dystopia is now available at several retailers.
Please remember to check out the posts from the other participants at http://sfrcontests.blogspot.com/p/sfr-brigade-presents.html

Here is an excerpt with the heroine on the dystopian Earth she will soon leave.
Lily strode through the grimy subterranean passages to her tiny room, flushed with the success of her performance and indifferent to the hunched figures of the silent passersby. She ignored the group of five ragged youths lounging idly at the corner, until they moved deliberately in her direction.
“Out alone!” one man jeered, clearly believing her to be vulnerable.
“We’ll give you a good time!” another man called with vulgar intentions, reaching out to grab her arm.
She swiveled rapidly, punching him below the belt. He collapsed with a moan.
Two others advanced angrily on her. She leaped at them, aiming a vicious kick. Her target crumpled in agony, clutching at his groin. The third man hesitated, unluckily for him. Her fist thudded against his jaw and he sagged to the ground, unconscious.
One of the two youths, who had hung behind well out of the action, shouted, “Watch out! It’s Tiger Lily. I saw her fight in the arena.”
The other man called, “She’s big trouble! Let’s get out of here!”

On the new planet of Delta, her scout team meets the hero and hostile natives.
While the others were resting, Lily wandered off to examine a rocky outcrop where she had caught a glimpse of red among the rocks. When she reached the outcrop, nothing was visible. She paused and stared up at the forbidding grey sky.
Suddenly, her leg was pulled from under her. Screaming, she toppled to the ground. Huge chitinous jaws trapped her leg, dragging her toward a red gaping mouth. She twisted around, wedged her knife between the jaws, and wrestled the blade from side to side, trying to loosen the grip on her leg. A needle-like tail arched down toward her helpless struggling body.
In a rush of air, Conley leaped and slashed his sword through the menacing tail, catching the severed end in his other hand. Standing astride the crumpled body of the dangerous creature, he sliced through its narrow neck.
Lily sighed in admiration. He looked magnificent, like a tall, medieval knight brandishing a heavy sword.

Don't Take Any Chances! Snippet from Starrella Falls for #WeWriWa #Supergirl + FREE ebooks

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

I’m continuing the scene from: Starrella Falls, Book 2 in the Secret Supers, until the end of this chapter. Then, I’ll begin to post snippets from Book 3. You can read the first chapters of Starrella Falls HERE.

Background: Estelle and Toby are superheroes and their telepathic animal partners are Rockette, the flying mare, and Growler, the jaguar.
Toby knocks out the wanted murderer, Croaker, and Mark Copper offers to take Croaker to the police station. Instead, Estelle and Toby discover Mark is driving north, probably to Dupree Air Base.
The last line, spoken by Toby, was: “I’m going after Copper.”
With apologies for creative punctuation to fit the sentence limit.

Flinging her arms around him, Estelle cried, “Don’t take any chances, Toby! Take me with you; I don’t want to lose you.”
“Don’t fuss; I’ll be on guard. Bigger headache too; have to chat with my pal, Joth. Can’t have the army discovering Croaker’s an alien; would start an uproar. Reckon it ain’t good for Farleons or Zarnoths.”
Pulling out his phone, Toby drawled, “Goin’ to call him now.” Touching the screen, he grunted a greeting. After a pause while he listened, he spoke rapidly in a strange language. Farli, Estelle presumed, since she did not understand a word.

Now, Estelle has good reason to be worried. Only a week earlier, she rescued Toby after he was captured by Croaker’s henchmen. You try rescuing a hunky guy who can’t walk!

I envisaged Delta as a younger Earth. It has an eccentric orbit and greater extremes of temperature. The mountains are newer and higher than on Earth. The seas are full of large predators. On land, the major flora are ferns, mosses, and grasses. Giant arthropods are the dominant animals.
And of course, one tall warrior in black armor.

“Thanks!” Lily panted. She sat up and massaged her leg.
“Sorry we’re late!” John apologized. “Guard Conley has an incredible speed.”
Conley held out a bulging mass cut from the tip of the tail. “Poison,” he said. “Put on arrow to kill.” Then, he threw the ugly lump far away.
“A dangerous beastie,” Max muttered, staring at the twitching yellow body.

Snippet for #SFFSat from A Tale of Two Colonies

Welcome to the final Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/
I have enjoyed being in this group, reading your contributions and comments, and making new friends. In the past year, I have published the Grand Master's Trilogy (SciFi/fantasy & romance) and started a new series with Super Starrella (superheros, aliens, quirky animals & romance). Very productive, considering  my "day job" as a scientist.
For anyone who wishes to follow my work in future, I have also been posting snippets on Sundays at http://www.wewriwa.com
My snippet today is from an older work, A Tale of Two Colonies. Tiger Lily competes for a place on the next colony ship. This section highlights why she wants to leave the Terra slums.

Lily strode through the grimy subterranean passages to her tiny room, flushed with the success of her performance and indifferent to the hunched figures of the silent passersby. She ignored the group of five ragged youths lounging idly at the corner, until they moved deliberately in her direction.

Excerpt from A Tale of Two Colonies

Tiger Lily longs for freedom. In her fight to escape the subterranean slums of Terra, Lily competes to join the scout team selected for the next spaceship along with a new set of prospective colonists. Their mission to discover the colony lost four hundred years earlier is challenged by the voracious predators of the planet. In the mountains, they encounter Conley, a grim warrior who longs to escape the confines of his isolated valley. Has Tiger Lily met her match in this tortured warrior? Where is he leading them? Danger lies ahead, and conflicts with humans and aliens. Can they ensure the safety of the new human colonists, or must they retreat in shame to Terra?

Excerpt
Lily leaned against Conley and relaxed with the boulder supporting her back. She closed her eyes sleepily under the warmth of the afternoon sun.
Conley shifted slightly. “Lily?” he said softly.
“Yes,” she opened her eyes. He was gazing into her face.
“Thank you,” he said, and kissed her warmly.
She slid her arms around his neck and leaned into his embrace. It was peaceful lying in the sun with a faint humming sound in the distance. As they kissed, the sound grew louder.
Suddenly, Conley broke away and leapt to his feet with a warning yell, “Stripers!”
Looking up, Lily discovered the source of the sound was giant orange and black insects flying above. She struggled erect and pulled out her laser. Conley was jumping high to slash with his long sword at the zooming insects, which were attacking in formation. Rows of huge insects advanced toward their camp. They had two pairs of vibrating wings and bore a stinger on their tails.
Tiger Lily swung into action, firing her laser beam and severing their bulging orange bodies. They kept attacking; swooping down and quickly soaring out of reach. Lily and Conley moved together, standing back to back for protection, while swiping at the heads of the flying monsters.
