A

Dale has kindly agreed to answer some questions about her writing and life.
Why
did you write your book (or series)?
I decided to join NaNoWriMo
(National Novel Writing Month) in 2007 and I thought, to get into the spirit of
Nano, I wouldn’t even try to think of a story idea before November 1. So Nov 1
came and I was sitting at the breakfast table trying to think of a story. I had
nothing—zilch. I told my husband I
couldn’t come up with a story idea so he told me about his weird dream he had
the night before. The dream was about a wall of doors and people would enter
one and exit another some distance away. I can’t remember the rest of his
dream, but that small snippet was enough to get me started thinking. I went to
my dungeon and through that November, I wrote Beyond the Wall, which is now The
Inner Realm.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a
writer?
I’ve
imagined being whisked away to other worlds since I was little but I never
thought to put my imaginings down on paper until I started writing songs in the
early 1990’s. My ballads grew into whole stories and I loved writing them so
much, I began taking writing courses—lots of writing courses.
What
do you find are the best and worst parts of being an indie author?
The best? I love having full control
over every aspect of writing and publishing. I write what I want when I want
and can publish what I want when I want.
The worst? I hate having full
control over everything. It’s scary. Is the story good enough? How can I
improve? Where can I steal money for editing and covers etc?
Do you have any pets at home?
We have
Zeus, a tailless (born that way) three-legged dingo/cattle cross. He chased a
train and caught it, but, as I’ve said before, it was understandable because it
was a cattle train.

And
Georgie, a little foxy that my husband and son found nearly dying of thirst in
the bush. We tried to find her owners but couldn’t so she, and her forever
shedding coat, lives with us now.

The
dogs fell in love at first sight and live happily together with our five
chooks… um, chickens without so much as an argument.
What
interesting aspect of your life would surprise your readers?
This isn’t really about me but I
wish it was me. There’s a saying when someone doesn’t close a door. “Were you
born in a tent!?” Well, my brother can honestly say yes to that. He was born in
a tent on Hollaways Beach in Far North Queensland. Yeah, he could always leave
doors open and never get in trouble for it. However, I was born in Cairns
Hospital. J
What are your current projects and plans for
the future?
I’m
really excited about three projects I’m doing at the moment. A YA Science
Fiction adventure that I hope will be good enough to enter into Kindle Scout, an
adult Science Fiction series, and a zombie series. The zombie series has
developed from a first draft I wrote during one of those writing courses I
spoke of earlier. Yep, they should keep me busy for a while.
