Shots cracked. Snippet from Gargoyle Hunt for #WeWriWa #Superheroes

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.

Since my WIPs are at a rough stage, I am still posting snippets from Gargoyle Hunt, Book 3 of Secret Supers.

Blurb
Danger is the last thing on Estelle’s mind when she visits the University of Oxenford for a summer course. But, mysterious thefts and shadowy figures spur her into action. With Toby five thousand miles away, Estelle and her winged horse must hunt for the culprits alone. Soon they are embroiled in a mixed bag of aliens and ancient magic. Toby’s unexpected arrival throws her into turmoil and spurs events into a climax.

Toby is in London for a meeting with the head of the British Farleons. When Toby left the building, he discovered a short man was tailing him. His attempts to shake the tail are in last week’s snippet –
The final cliffhanger sentence was: Pain burst down the back of his neck.

Dizzy and shaken, he stumbled against the nearest wall. Muggers! His tail had called in an ambush. Adrenaline pulsed, firing Toby’s instincts into fight mode. Dodging aside, he aimed a kick at the man who had walloped him. His attacker yelped and slammed to the ground; his cudgel thumped on the concrete.
Shots cracked.
Toby swiveled to face the first armed man and blinked in astonishment. A large black bird swooped on his attacker, beating its wings at the man’s head and stabbing its cruel beak at his eyes.

  1. Wow! I did not expect that. And neither, apparently, did Toby.

    1. How could he? But, he must guess the bird is Farleon like his cat Growler.

    1. Lol!
The hawk Fricka is a character in the first two books, so this avian helper is consistent.

  9. Great snippet! Before I finished reading the sentence, I anticipated the bird was pecking at the guy's head (not eyes). My way was funny, yours more efficient. LOL
