She is very young: Snippet from Super Starrella for #WeWriWa #Superhero Romance

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Today, I’ll continue the scene from my new release, Super Starrella. Estelle was knocked unconscious in an explosion, and when she woke, she was tied down in a strange place. Read last week’s snippet here: http://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2016/03/what-is-this-creepy-place-snippet-for.html
It ended with: Voices drifted to her ears from outside her room. They seemed to be discussing her.

“She is very young for the activation.” A woman’s impassive voice, judging by the high pitch.
The gruff voice of a man said, “Can we trust a native like her? Our need is urgent. We are so few and the enemy grows more intrusive.”
Estelle held her breath, intent on listening to the conversation.
A second man said, “She is not the first, nor the youngest. She is nearly eighteen.” The nasal twang hit a familiar chord. The image of his sullen face and black ponytail flew into her mind, Toby, the hunky young man with the motorbike.

Starrella

Blurb
Teen superhero, Starrella, and her flying horse tackle villains in the skies of Atalanta.
The quiet summer before her freshman year turns frighteningly weird after Estelle Wright trespasses onto an Army base. Blown into the air and knocked unconscious, she wakes with a nascent superpower. Not to mention a winged horse with a snarky attitude and a mind of her own.
Back home in Atalanta, a serial killer is targeting the students at Goldman University. Before long she must juggle college classes with sneaking out of the house after dark to battle alien monsters. Estelle’s life is in danger, but who can she trust: handsome Captain Copper from military intelligence, or hunky Toby, the tough gangster with a motorbike? Both men have secret agendas, but falling in love is not in their plans.
Young adult superheroes, quirky animal sidekicks, and a dash of romance enliven this thrilling adventure. Book 1 of the Secret Supers.

  1. Sounds like someone is about to prove their worth to the naysayers. Fun snippet.

  2. A native like her? Now, I'm wondering who has her confined, and what they've done to her. Great snippet!

  3. Given your genre, Aurora, I'd say she's been captured by some truly out-of-this-world guys.

  4. Excellent snippet Aurora. Again, I am left with tons of questions. What happened to the 'others' who were activated. And how is she a 'native'? And how is Toby involved?

  10. Good twist there with Toby showing up. Scary situation to be in, but I'm guessing she's not the type to just wring her hands and hope somebody else saves her!

  11. Wondering what kind of "native" she is and what Toby is doing there. Great twist!

  12. All kinds of questions, Aurora. Does she have innate abilities that make her the best choice for this? Or have they sought out the best candidate based on something else? :-)

    1. You'll have to wait until book 2 to learn some of the answers. If you read the book, the previous chapter gives some clues.
