It's impossible! Snippet from EUROPA for #WeWriWa New #SciFiRom

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories.

I’m posting snippets from my latest novel set on Jupiter’s moon, Europa. The book releases on November 14th.

Tag line: Daredevil scientist and scarred alien in perilous alliance

Blurb
Dr. Nikki Bell’s plan to discover intelligent life in the oceans of Europa hits a rocky start when her spaceship crashes on the icy surface. Seconds before she blacks out, she spies a man’s face in the water beneath the ice. When she wakes on the submarine Station, nobody believes her story. Convinced the mysterious stranger saved her life, Nikki searches for him while she explores the ocean and its alien inhabitants.
Kiron Arqin Ramis chose exile as a Watcher on a remote outpost to redeem his family’s honor. He never expected to find an attractive Earther woman close to death. He violates the prime policy by rescuing her. Despite suffering the penalty, he strives to warn her about his hostile leaders.
Nikki’s unexpected meeting with Kiron triggers a chain of disasters in Europa’s perilous oceans. Can the daredevil scientist and scarred Watcher forge a new alliance despite their people’s antagonism?
Book 1 in a new SciFi series, Taxyon Space.

After Nikki’s lifepod crashed on Europa, she tumbled into a hole in the ice and saw a stranger’s face in the water below. She woke in Galileo Station. You can read my last snippet here: https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2017/11/safe-in-topside-snippet-from-europa-for.html
I’ve skipped a few paragraphs. Forgive my abuse of semicolons in the excerpt.

Dr. Foster frowned and asked, “You mentioned a man. What exactly did you see? You were unconscious when we fished you out of the water.”
“I saw a man in the water underneath the ice. He had red hair and a tattoo under his left eye; he smiled at me.” She remembered the rapid succession of emotions; her relief, delight at his smile, and her certainty he would rescue her.
Dr. Foster objected, “How could you see his whole face; no facemask or helmet for oxygen? It’s impossible; how could this man breathe underwater? You must have imagined the face of a man. Cogitative functions are often impaired during oxygen deprivation, although you exhibit few other symptoms.”

    1. Thanks! They also tell her nobody on Europa matches her description - a mystery man.

  3. I love how you used the smile to show this wasn't a body, but an actual, living (breathing?) man. Outstanding snippet, Aurora. Very compelling.

    1. I never thought he might be a corpse because I always saw his smile.
I'm glad it is compelling since this scene is the impetus for the story.

  4. I have a feeling it’s good for him if they don’t believe he exists, but frustrating for her!

    1. Correct. People on the station don't know about the Watchers ... until the end of the story.

  5. A reasonable explanation . . . she's not going to believe. Nice development, Aurora, placing her at odds with her own kind.

  16. Why aren't doctors/authorities more open to impossibilities? I hope she doesn't give up believing what she saw.

    1. Nikki is a scientist. She understands what the doctor is saying, but she doesn't stop searching for the mysterious man.
