Welcome
to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read
8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their
work. Enjoy!
Today,
I’m continuing snippets from an unpublished short story in my superhero series.
Background: After Estelle joined their table, Toby, the leader of the
Jags gang and the Secret Supers, explained that Gecko’s baby sister is missing.
The only clue is the school bus driver’s description of a woman who met the
girl. This weekend, we learn a little more about the supers.
Brief
background: Toby, the leader of the Jags street gang and the Secret Supers,
explained that Gecko’s baby sister is missing. The only clue is the school bus
driver’s description of a woman who met the girl. Most of the Secret Supers
have companion animals.

Excuse my abuse of semicolons to fit into 10
sentences.
“Patrol as Supers in pairs for safety, and when we spot a likely
kid, we do a switcheroo to casual gear.” Toby gestured to Gecko and Ice, “You’re
one pair; you both know tons of places in the city where kids can hide.”
Grinning at Estelle, he said, “We’re a couple; fly around, and slip off to
interrogate likely suspects.”
“Sure, Toby; tonight?” she arched her eyebrows.
“Yep; you and the mare cover west of the connector, and I’ll
patrol east with the cat. Don’t dash into trouble; call me before you go
visible. Okay?”
“Sheesh, I can fry the bullies.” Rolling her eyes at his string
of instructions, she voiced a silent complaint to Rockette, “I hate nagging; he’s as bad as Mom.”
“Bossy like the cat,”
the mare agreed.

She's a super who doesn't like to take orders. Especially from Toby, it seems. Great that they're going to look for the girl right away.
ReplyDeleteCorrect. Estelle and Toby have had their spats.
DeleteInteresting inclusion of animals. Nice addition to the story :-)
ReplyDeleteThese animals have unusual abilities also.
DeleteI love the super hero 'tone' of this. I can just see them having this discussion! Great snippet...
ReplyDeleteThanks. I have a fondness for comic-style superheroes.
DeleteI'm intrigued by the two animals, and looking forward to seeing how they get onnwith their search. I don't blame her at all for not enjoying being ordered around thouugh.
ReplyDeleteThe animals are fun. They're good foils for the "humans" - actually Toby and the Ice Princess are "aliens" born on Earth.
DeleteIf this cat is anything like Effing Feline, he'd very bossy indeed.
ReplyDeleteHe's also a large black jaguar so he can enforce his orders.
DeleteBossy, bossy. But isn't a leader always bossy? Somebody has to lead or there would be chaos. Good snippet.
ReplyDeleteThanks. But, Toby tends to be overprotective of Estelle.
DeleteI like the buddy system in place, especially since they are utilizing their strengths to cover as much ground as efficiently as possible.
ReplyDeleteYes. Toby has his gang well-organized.
DeleteI love how many traits they take on from the animals. And it probably works in reverse too, I suspect.
ReplyDeleteProbably true, although I didn't think of it.
DeleteBossy like the cat - I love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks! Though our two cats aren't bossy.
DeleteI enjoyed the conversation. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI'm intrigued by the animals. Great snippet.
ReplyDeleteThe animals are the most original aspect of this series.
