The child is fearless - snippet from COSMIC LOCK for #WeWrWa #SciFi Fantasy

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors.
Enjoy a little distraction from pandemic worries. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work.
I’m giving snippets from Cosmic Lock, the sixth book in my epic science fantasy series. With the unpleasant prospect of moving all my classes online next month, I made a push to finish the book and it’s now available for preorder at most places.
I’ll continue the scene where empath Violet and her 13-month old son Varan are visiting their dragon friends. The little boy loves dragons. Last week, you met the Black Dragon Ythris. You can read the snippet here: https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2020/07/a-social-visit-snippet-from-cosmic-lock.html
The last line was: Ythris gave a snort of amusement. “Your son is lively.”

She laughed. “He takes after his father. He’d like to teleport onto your back, but I’m restraining him. I’m afraid he’ll fall.”
“The child is fearless.” The Black Dragon offered, “If both of you mount my back, you can keep him secure.”
“Thank you.” Violet used a psi pulse to rise onto the dragon’s ridged back and settled with her legs dangling at the base of his wings. She propped Varan in front and he grabbed a ridged scale.

Well, that was 9 lines for the official snippet, but I’m sure you’d like a little more.

As the great dragon stooped his head to enter the passage to the eyrie, the baby kicked his heels and chuckled in glee. Ythris lumbered down the tunnel leading to the spacious hall at the lower level. Violet sensed the dragons assembled around the firepit and the youngsters cavorting around the elders. Wallith and Brululians mingled with the dragons.
Halfway down, the Black Dragon diverted into the narrower side passage to his private chambers. The smooth walls of his family cave were illuminated by the flames from a sconce of burning oil. Ythris rattled his glossy black scales, dislodging his riders.

A social visit? Snippet from COSMIC LOCK for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors.

Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work.

I’m continuing to show snippets from Cosmic Lock, the sixth book in my epic science fantasy series. I am doing the final pass to polish this story and I’ll publish as soon as it’s gone through proofing.
Violet has taken Varan, her 13-month old son, to visit their dragon friends on the hot planet of Sythos. Both Violet and her son are wearing protective suits and helmets due to the high temperatures and high levels of oxygen in the atmosphere. Dragons’ eyries are carved inside tall pillars of rock in the desert-like terrain. Violet and her son are waiting on the entrance platform of the tunnel to the dragons’ caves.
The final sentence was: No more than five minutes later, Violet detected the approach of her friend, Ythris.

The huge Black Dragon stomped onto the ledge. His scales shone like polished onyx, and his head towered high above her. He lowered his long neck to stare at her, a fierce gleam in his great golden eyes. Offering the big claw on his foreleg in greeting, he hissed, “Violet Griffin, Zyzost friend, you returned unscathed from the parallel universe.”
“We escaped through the Rift with the help of our dragon comrades, Seltos and Elfrise.”
“They have related their tale.” Twitching his horns forward, he asked, “Is this visit purely social?”
She squeezed his large claw, and lifted Varan up toward the Black Dragon’s head. “Entirely social on Varan’s part, although my visit is primarily to check on noble Seltos and valiant Elfrise.”

End of an official 9 lines, with a few more to follow.

“An impulse worthy of your generosity. Come with me to our chambers. Istrelle will bring our son to play with your zyzost child, and we can speak in private.”
“Ride,” Varan demanded, grabbing one of the dragon’s knobby horns.
Ythris gave a snort of amusement. “Your son is lively.”

Strategic Goals
I’m aiming to write longer series and pump sales by promoting the first book.
My longest series, Grand Masters’ Galaxy, has a short prequel and five full-length novels. I plan to complete the sixth book soon.
Taxyon Space, my second longest series, includes four novels and a short story. The fourth Book, Alarik, was conceived as the start of a trilogy about the three brothers in the Flaming Comets Triad. Each book will focus on a different brother. Alarik is the oldest brother. The next two books will be titled Baswin and Karrik after the two younger brothers.
Secret Supers has three novels plus a short story.
Atrapako on Eden comprises three novels.

Plans for future stories

In addition to books 5 and 6 in Taxyon Space, I am considering two other possibilities.

One idea is writing a second medieval romance to follow Dame Audrey

 Dame Audrey

Another idea is writing a Gaslamp fantasy. I have a plot in mind for a story set in Britain in 1918 or 1919.

The Dragons of Sythos - snippet from COSMIC LOCK for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors.
Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work.

I’m continuing the story in Cosmic Lock, the sixth book in my epic science fantasy series. At present, I am plodding through edits/rewriting the current draft of the book.
I have skipped to another early chapter with a new set of characters. Violet is taking her baby son to visit their dragon friends on the hot planet of Sythos. Both Violet and her son are wearing protective suits and helmets due to the high temperatures and high levels of oxygen in the atmosphere. Volcanic vents and fires are common on this planet.

Violet and her son emerged on the ledge at the entrance to the Black Dragon’s eyrie, a tall solitary crag protruding from the orange sands of a desert. Far overhead, flashes of lightning flickered in the murky red clouds of Sythos.
Startled by their sudden appearance, the watch dragon spread its wings, reared and hissed a warning. An instant later, the dragon recognized the visitor and hissed, “Zyzost Violet, do you wish to see the Black Dragon?”
Violet said, “Please tell Ythris the Black that I’ve brought my son to play with golden Istros.”
The brown dragon swiveled toward the dark entrance, bent its long neck into the tunnel and uttered a shrill whistle.
The scratching of claws on the stone passage preceded the hasty arrival of a small umber-scaled dragon with outstretched wings. It folded its wings and tilted its head in a question.
Varan cooed in appreciation and waved his arms. Alarmed by the excited baby, the small messenger fluttered its wings and shuffled backward.

End of my ten lines, and a few more follow.

The watch dragon relayed Violet’s message.
“I’ll fly on your command.” Instantly, the small dragon whipped its wings, rose above the floor and dived into the tunnel.
No more than five minutes later, Violet detected the approach of her friend, Ythris.
