The Solinar Veterinary Clinic - Snippet from Super Starrella for #WeWriWa #Superhero #Technothriller

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Here, writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join the fun and read our snippets.
Today, I’ll continue the teaser scene from my new release, Super Starrella. Estelle was knocked unconscious in an explosion. When she woke, she was tied down in a weird cylinder and heard strangers discussing her. Then, a woman in a white coat entered and spoke to her. Read last week’s snippet here:
The last sentence was Can I go home?” Estelle shivered, afraid she was an unwilling participant in some outlandish experiment.

“Not yet; we need to run more tests to ensure there are no unpleasant side effects. We have informed Mrs. Dawson that you are staying at the Solinar Veterinary Clinic.”
The name raised new questions in Estelle’s mind. Wary of her captors, she asked, “Who are you?”
“You may call me Dr. Netta,” the woman tapped the side of the table, eliciting a series of clicks. The top of the cylinder swung open and the straps loosened around Estelle’s ankles and wrists. Free to move, she rubbed her eyes and wondered if she were trapped in a nightmare.
Dr. Netta removed a bulb from a cabinet, twisted off the top and offered the bulb to Estelle, “Drink this; you will gain energy.”
Estelle squeezed the bulb and the cool liquid slid down her throat. Seconds later, her head swam, mist coiled before her eyes, and she fell down a dark hole.

 Super Starrella

Blurb
Teen superhero, Starrella, and her flying horse tackle villains in the skies of Atalanta.
The quiet summer before her freshman year turns frighteningly weird after Estelle Wright trespasses onto an Army base. Blown into the air and knocked unconscious, she wakes with a nascent superpower. Not to mention a winged horse with a snarky attitude and a mind of her own.
Back home in Atalanta, a serial killer is targeting the students at Goldman University. Before long she must juggle college classes with sneaking out of the house after dark to battle alien monsters. Estelle’s life is in danger, but who can she trust: handsome Captain Copper from military intelligence, or hunky Toby, the tough gangster with a motorbike? Both men have secret agendas, but falling in love is not in their plans.
Young adult superheroes, quirky animal sidekicks, and a dash of romance enliven this thrilling adventure. Book 1 of the Secret Supers.

  3. That was sneaky. Good snippet. I also want to know why a vet had her strapped down.

  4. "She fell down a dark hole." Now that sounds very, very bad... Good choice of description, Aurora!

    1. A dark hole, metaphorically speaking. She is not happy about her treatment at the Clinic.

  5. Why is she in a veterinary clinic? And beware of sinister doctors bearing energy drinks!

  6. So much for "giving you energy"! This may give her cause to be a little less trusting.

  7. A veterinary clinic, and now a drink that made her pass out? I think there is so much she is not being told. Great snippet! :)

  8. Never trust anyone who says, "Drink this." Interesting set up. I wonder where it's going? Nice job, Aurora!

  9. Oh no, going from bad to worse! We're worried about Estelle, hope she figures out how to get away from these people. Vet clinic? What the heck! :-)

    1. Read a little further and the vet part will begin to make some sense.

  11. Uh oh, not a good development. She probably should have been more suspicious of that cool liquid! And the place being a 'veterinary' clinic can't be good either. Just a fascinating snippet...

  12. The medical help in a veterinary clinic doesn't induce confidence. Wondering what she'll find when she emerges from the "dark hole".

  13. Great last sentence, very evocative of the effect of the drug on her. And I was like, "Wait, WHAT? A Vet clinic?" LOL ...must know more!

    1. The book cover shows a horse, which partly explains the vet clinic.

  14. And I guess she shouldn't have drunk the liquid? She'll be kicking herself when she comes to, won't she? She'll certainly be less trusting!

  15. That last line reminded me forcefully of Alice in Wonderland. Down the rabbit hole indeed ... though I wonder if this draught will make her larger or smaller.

  18. Great description. I think being told she was in a veterinary clinic should have been her first warning bell.

    1. Hearing the people discussing her was one clue, and being tied down was worse. She wants to become a vet, so that part might not be so scary to her.

  19. A vet clinic makes me wonder if she's considered an animal by them. Very eerie!

  20. I'm a bit worried about the 'unpleasant side effects' on top of everything else she's going through!

    1. That Dr. Netta wants to scare her into compliance, but Estelle is tougher than she looks.

  21. Veterinary Clinic, what the hell! I'm wonder if the doctor is not creating the unpleasant side effects on her own. I wonder why Estelle drunk the potion so readily.

  22. Sneaky tricksters! I would have never trusted that if I had woken to find myself some sort of captive, but alas, she's probably too scared to think straight.
