Knotted Hyperthreads - Snippet from JUPITER for #WeWriWa #SciFi

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I’m running another snippet from Jupiter, Book 3 in Taxyon Space. Nikki and Kiron have been summoned by Prime Jadel.

I’ve skipped a few lines – it’s in Nikki’s POV.
[Slightly edited to fit]
Jadel said, “The hyperthreads passing through your Earther system have become distorted. The nexus must be stabilized, or else we shall lose the ability to travel between our planets.”
Styx, were they marooned on Rishalt and separated from humankind forever? Nikki pressed her fingers on her lips to stifle a gasp of dismay.
His gaze still locked on Jadel’s face, Kiron caressed Nikki’s hand unobtrusively, “Gracious Prime, where is the nexus located?”
Focusing on his sincere face, Jadel said, “You, as an ex-Watcher, should know; the nexus lies within the stormy gas planet called Jupiter.”
Fighting off her terror of being isolated, Nikki asked, “What do you wish of us?”
“The pair of you, the Ramis Bell duad, will travel to this Earther planet to unravel the knot and clear the hyper-routes.”
Kiron bowed and gave the traditional response, “Gracious Prime, I hear and obey.”
“How will we recognize the aberrant factor?” Nikki asked.

 Jupiter

JUPITER:
A simple hop across hyperspace turns deadly, crushing hopes for a human-Warrish alliance
Nikki and Kiron Ramis Bell are studying the marine life of Rishalt when they are summoned for an audience with the Prime. Tol-Jadel sets them the task of investigating a hyperspace perturbation near Jupiter. They must return to the oceans of Europa and prevent this anomaly from severing the hyperroutes between Earth and Rishalt. But, tensions are rising between Warrish Watchers and the humans on Galileo Station, and Earth’s governments are squabbling over the proposed alliance with the aliens. Can Nikki and Kiron erase the obstacle before their home planets are separated forever?

  1. I'm glad that Nikki at least has the sense to ask for concrete details!

    1. She is a scientist and not overwhelmed by the Prime.

  2. I'm guessing the Prime doesn't expect to have to answer questions though...so whatever comes next will be interesting. Enjoyed the snippet!

  5. I love the perhaps-tongue-in-cheek humor of this line: "A simple hop across hyperspace . . ."

    1. Thank you. Quite a lot of my writing is tongue-in-cheek.

  6. I wonder what in their backgrounds has made them the ones who must go on this mission. I'm late to the game here. Are they specially qualified for the job?

    1. You would probably need to read the first two books. Jadel believes they will succeed.

  7. This sounds like a crazy mission! Hopefully the Prime has good reason to believe they can pull it off.

  9. Yeah, this is not going to be anywhere near as easy as the Prime makes it sound.

  11. The repercussions if they don't fix the problem is horrendous. I guess they'd better do it.
