The child is fearless - snippet from COSMIC LOCK for #WeWrWa #SciFi Fantasy

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors.
Enjoy a little distraction from pandemic worries. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work.
I’m giving snippets from Cosmic Lock, the sixth book in my epic science fantasy series. With the unpleasant prospect of moving all my classes online next month, I made a push to finish the book and it’s now available for preorder at most places.
I’ll continue the scene where empath Violet and her 13-month old son Varan are visiting their dragon friends. The little boy loves dragons. Last week, you met the Black Dragon Ythris. You can read the snippet here: https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2020/07/a-social-visit-snippet-from-cosmic-lock.html
The last line was: Ythris gave a snort of amusement. “Your son is lively.”

She laughed. “He takes after his father. He’d like to teleport onto your back, but I’m restraining him. I’m afraid he’ll fall.”
“The child is fearless.” The Black Dragon offered, “If both of you mount my back, you can keep him secure.”
“Thank you.” Violet used a psi pulse to rise onto the dragon’s ridged back and settled with her legs dangling at the base of his wings. She propped Varan in front and he grabbed a ridged scale.

Well, that was 9 lines for the official snippet, but I’m sure you’d like a little more.

As the great dragon stooped his head to enter the passage to the eyrie, the baby kicked his heels and chuckled in glee. Ythris lumbered down the tunnel leading to the spacious hall at the lower level. Violet sensed the dragons assembled around the firepit and the youngsters cavorting around the elders. Wallith and Brululians mingled with the dragons.
Halfway down, the Black Dragon diverted into the narrower side passage to his private chambers. The smooth walls of his family cave were illuminated by the flames from a sconce of burning oil. Ythris rattled his glossy black scales, dislodging his riders.

Follow the superpowered Griffins on a rollercoaster adventure where new threats counter each success.

Grand Masters Violet and Athanor Griffin return from beyond the Cosmic Rift with two shiploads of rescued children and escaped slaves, but their enemies have not been idle in their absence. Avalon is in flames and their baby son is missing. Finding him may be the easiest of their problems. They must unite the fractious Grand Masters, stop the bloodsucking Ixioths from enslaving sentients, and seal the cosmic rupture to prevent new incursions of the vindictive Nulls. The clock is ticking. They have twelve days to squash their enemies before their final venture into the alternate universe. Can they overcome the challenges and secure peace for the galaxy?
Read the exciting conclusion to the Cosmic Trilogy, books 4-6 of this epic science fantasy series.

  1. Excellent descriptive writing! I could visualize it--and it felt kind of warm too. A dragon cave... I'd like to visit one. :-)

  2. How nice of the dragon to indulge the little guy like that. I wonder, do they regularly give rides?

    1. They don't usually give rides into their caves. But Violet has often flown on Ythris or another dragon.
Ythris has a son a little older than Varan.

  7. I bet they don't let just anyone ride their backs! How demeaning for a dragon! :)
And I a curious how she can stop him from teleporting.

    1. No they don't approve of humans in general never mind riders.
Violet is much more powerful than her son.

  9. If this dragon ever wants more gold for its cave, it can always charge for piggy-back rides, don't you think? I know I'd pay.
