Welcome to another Sunday
with Weekend Writing Warriors.
Writers in different genres showcase their stories with 8-10 sentences. Join
the fun and read our snippets.
I’m
continuing the scene from: Starrella Falls,
Book 2 in the Secret Supers, for a little longer. You can read the first
chapters HERE.
Background: Estelle and Toby are superheroes and
their telepathic animal partners are Rockette, the flying mare, and Growler,
the jaguar.
Toby
knocks out the wanted murderer, Croaker, and Mark Copper offers to take Croaker
to the police station. After Mark drives off, Diane accuses him of wanting the
reward for Croaker. Toby offers to take Diane and Estelle to their rooms.

Toby said little as they walked
along the dark streets, and Estelle decided he was worried about Croaker.
Luckily, Diane kept up a lively chatter until they reached her dorm.
Pulling her student card from her
purse, Diane said, “Thanks for the escort, Toby.” She swiped the card reader
and entered quickly, calling, “Bye guys!”
When the door swung closed again,
Toby squeezed Estelle’s wrist and whispered, “Heard from the bird yet?”
“Let me check,” Estelle thrust
out a mental summons. A second later, Rockette answered, “Car’s on the highway, driving north; want me to keep chasing it?”
“Dupree Air Base,” Toby said,
tugging Estelle away from the residence hall. “Copper wasn’t after the money.
Reckon he’s taking Croaker to the military jail.”

Let's hope he's right. Good snippet, Aurora. :)
ReplyDeleteThey'll have to check.
DeleteOh, I wonder why he's heading that way. Best to keep Rocket on him to see what he's up to. I love the intrigue in this snippet!
ReplyDeleteIt is complex.
DeleteI kinda get the impression Toby somehow heard Rockette's telepathic response. Or was it just a phone call of some sort.
ReplyDeleteRockette can talk telepathically with the jaguar, Toby's companion, so Toby can get the message indirectly.
DeleteEven more intrigue! Great snippet.
ReplyDelete~Joyce Scarbrough
Of course!
DeleteInteresting development. I like the telepathic communication, too.
ReplyDeleteYes. They can have two conversations at the same time.
DeleteFun that she can use telepathy to stay in touch! Interesting snippet...
ReplyDeleteIn this series, the supers can communicate telepathically with their companion animals.
DeleteOh fun...the horse is following the vehicle.
ReplyDeleteThe horse is disguised as a pigeon.
DeleteI still don't trust him -- and now I wonder if they're working together (and with the military) against our heroes. (Paranoid, ain't I?)
ReplyDeleteEstelle might share your mistrust.
DeleteInteresting snippet. Wonder what will happen next.
ReplyDeleteI'll do another one or two snippets, but you won't learn everything.
DeleteI wonder why he's taking him to the base instead? Intriguing!
ReplyDeleteHe's in the army not the police.
DeleteI love the use of telepathic animals in here (big surprise!). Ingriguing snippet!
ReplyDeleteYes, the telepathic companion animals are my unique angle to this series.
DeleteThe horse is a pigeon? LOL I guess a horse galloping after a car would be attention getting. Nice snippet. I can feel the tension rising.
ReplyDeleteI know, it's a crazy mix of shifters! Guess what the jaguar transforms into!
DeleteHope he really is.
ReplyDeleteOh yes. But, will he arrive with Croaker?
DeleteHopefully Croaker will stay IN the military jail...
ReplyDeleteHe hasn't got there yet!
DeleteThe words "Air Base" give me a bad feeling about where this is heading.
ReplyDeleteI also got a little confused on Toby's explanation of the Air Base. Did he hear Rockette say that mentally? That didn't seem clear to me.
Sorry, it is a bit confusing. He can't hear Rockette directly, but Rockette is also talking with Toby's jaguar companion. Maybe I should add an explanation.
DeleteI get so many conflicting feelings reading over this bit. On one hand, this whole military jail thing is giving me a bad feeling something big is going to go down. And yet, the way the telepathic conversation is done gives me nostalgic fuzzies.
ReplyDeleteI guess that's good? The idea is to induce emotions in the reader.
