Hazardous landing - Snippet from WIP for #WeWriWa #SFR

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!

This week I'm continuing my new story. It will be book 3 in my series Atrapako on Eden. The settings are two remote planets: Eden, a terraformed planet with a colony of humans; and Vkani, an inhospitable planet with scaled human(oid) aliens. You can read about the planets and their inhabitants in my Blog Post HERE.

At the beginning of the story, Maya and her team are flying over the Deadlands in search of the ruins of an ancient civilization.
My tentative title is Trapped on Vkani. You can read the first lines in last week’s snippet - https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/01/storm-in-deadlands-snippet-from-wip-for.html
Note, the story is unedited and names may change.

“Helmets on,” Mark yelled, struggling to control the shuttle’s erratic path, “I’m taking her down.”
The four surveyors had discarded their headgear in the climate-controlled cabin. Now, they hurried to fasten their helmets, or more accurately, head masks with built-in goggles. They wore military-issue suits, provided by the Terran Space Authority for exploring dangerous environments like the Deadlands. Its heat and acrid atmosphere made the Deadlands unfit for life, but the high radiation levels posed the severest hazard.
Rocked by the powerful gale, the shuttle lurched to starboard. Cascades of rust-red sand blocked their view. The external monitors darkened under the onslaught of sand particles. Abruptly, screens blanked; the air recycler coughed to a halt; lights flickered out.

  1. All life? Or just life as they know it? An intriguing snippet! They are in quite the situation.

    1. All life, although there might be microbes capable of living in places with high radiation or deep under the sands.

    1. The drama will continue. And later I'll introduce the hero.

  3. Uh-oh! Everything flickering out cannot be good. Great tension here, and very clearly depicted.

BTW - I like that you've got a planet with a non-breathable atmosphere. My current WIP also needs people to wear masks. Makes for some interesting situations.

    1. Yes I agree. The tough natives can breathe the atmosphere, but it's toxic to normal humans.

  4. Uh oh! They are in deep trouble. I can't wait to read this.

  5. You're right, Aurora. Your story and mine have a lot of things in common. That shows, of course, what a remarkably wonderful writer you are. ;-)

But, my hero has scales and I bet yours doesn't.

  6. Everything flickering out is probably classed as "Not.A.Good.Thing."
