Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!
This week I’m continuing my new story. It will be book 3 in my series Atrapako on Eden. The settings are two remote planets: Eden, a terraformed planet with a colony of humans; and Vkani, an inhospitable planet with scaled human(oid) aliens. You can read about the planets and their inhabitants in my Blog Post HERE.
Maya and her team had planned to explore the ruins of an ancient civilization in the radioactive Deadlands of Vkani. But before they landed, a sandstorm smashed into their shuttle.
My tentative title is Trapped on Vkani. You can read last week’s snippet here – https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/01/flash-of-panic-snippet-from-trapped-for.html
I’ve skipped a few lines and changed the name Mark to Steve. Also, working on notes like “need scary ending” for Chapter 1.
Please excuse my abuse of punctuation to fit.
Maya
focused on Steve, Lieutenant Jarvi had been assigned by the Terran Space
Authority as their pilot and expert on inhospitable environments; he would know
what to do in this emergency.
“Steve?” she
prompted.
“Felix,
check the instruments,” he ordered, tapping the control panel; “Hong, call the
station.” Their support staff, Kit Rangi and Ross Wu,
were based in the orbiting station.
Grabbing
the mike, Hong called, “Mayday, mayday, come in Big Bird.” After repeating the
call for a third time, she swiveled to face Steve, “There’s no answer.”
He directed his laser beam at the
windshield. The light reflected on a dull red surface with tiny glints of
crystalline particles. “The shuttle’s buried under the sand, a thick layer. Our
radio transmissions can’t penetrate to the surface.”Draft Blurb
Marooned on a desolate
planet, joining forces with the enemy is their only hope.
Maya
Pandita’s expedition to the Deadlands ends abruptly when her shuttle is buried
by a violent sandstorm. Her team is abducted by the scaled inhabitants of the
planet and their belongings confiscated. Maya and her companions must try to outwit
their captors and call for help before they die in the toxic atmosphere.
Sa
Vittaran has a problem in his claws. Or rather three problems, three
smooth-skinned foreigners he has retrieved along with treasures from the ancient
ruins. He cannot stomach killing the puny creatures, nor can he permit them to
summon a superior warlord. His band must begin their long trek to his house
before the hot season.
An
attack by marauders forces Maya and the Blue leader into a wary alliance. They
must work together to thwart the bandits and reunite their company. Can Maya
convince Sa Vittaran to help her team? If she fails, they doomed to a short
unpleasant life on the desolate, war-torn planet.
Does he really love her or is she merely a pawn in his game?

Well, that is yet another problem. Someone is going to have to go out. Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteYes, although it is not the most severe problem.
DeleteIf their radio can't escape the sand, will they be able to? Nice tension.
ReplyDeleteThey'll have to try.
DeleteCan they dig it up? Will they have to?
ReplyDeleteThat is one possibility.
DeleteProblems galore. Fine snippet.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteNot a very good situation they're in, but lots of tension and excitement for the readers! Enjoyed the snippet, can't wait to read more...
ReplyDeleteMore will be forthcoming. I might skip to Chapter two.
DeleteOkay, we know someone is going to take a shuttle down to get them out. My question is this. Are any of them wearing red shirts? We all know what happens to the poor sod who wears a red shirt. *snicker* Nice snippet.
ReplyDeleteThey won't be rescued by a shuttle until the end of the story.
DeleteWonder how deep they are? If they're buried, they're not even going to be able to leave the shuttle!
ReplyDeleteI think you've got the right idea.
DeleteHopefully their support staff will realize they've lost contact. (And hopefully they'll realize that sooner rather than later.)
ReplyDeleteBut even if they realize, it may be too late!
DeleteNice description of the windshield, Aurora. I do wonder how they'll get out of this--if the scaley residents dig them out? :-)
ReplyDeleteSort of. The meeting of the two main characters is quite amusing.
DeleteYou have an amazing imagination!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteGreat tension. I'm curious to see what happens next. Do they start digging?
ReplyDeleteYes, they'll have to try to dig out.
DeleteOh that sucks. How will they get out without all the sand getting in? Great snippet, Aurora.
ReplyDeleteExactly - you're jumping ahead of my snippets.
