Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors. Meet writers in various genres and read 8-10 sentence snippets of their stories. Find a new author and sample their work. Enjoy!
I’m continuing my new story, Trapped on Vkani, book 3 in my series Atrapako on Eden. You can read about the planets and their inhabitants in my Blog Post HERE.
While flying over the radioactive Deadlands, Maya’s shuttle crashes. She and two of her team have been captured by Sa Vittaran, a blue scaled alien.
The aliens have
color-coded castes. Blue scales indicate a leader. Greens have technical
skills, massively built Reds are laborers and warriors. Everyone else has
Yellow scales.
You can read last
week’s snippet at https://auroraspringer.blogspot.com/2019/04/foreigners-snippet-from-scifirom.html
The last line was: “Foreigners,” the Blue said cryptically.
“Collect their weapons.”
I’ve skipped several
lines to bring you to a lighter moment. Sa Vittaran has decided to leave the ruins
before another sandstorm hits. Maya’s companions, Felix and Hong, have been
strapped onto the beasts of burden and led away by the two Reds.
Please excuse my
irregular punctuation to fit.
Sa Vittaran blew a small whistle; its shrill sound brought a new
animal, a lively beast with glossy black scales, round amber eyes, and a puff
of curly black hair on top of a narrow skull. Trotting on two muscular hind
limbs, its long-necked head was balanced by a stout tail bearing another puff
of hair on the end. It bore a leather halter and a saddle perched on its sloped
back. Lowering its muzzle, it snorted at the Blue.
He caught hold of the halter and led the animal toward her.
Before she had time to protest, he grasped her belt and tossed her onto the
saddle. Instinctively, she slid astride, leaned over the animal’s neck and
fumbled to grasp onto a leather strap.
Sa Vittaran leaped onto the animal and settled on the saddle
behind her. “Do not fear,” he said, “my pekron will carry us swiftly out of the
desolate lands.” He clasped her waist with one hand and tugged the reins to
guide the animal away from the ruins.
Marooned
on a desolate planet, joining forces with the enemy is their only hope.
Maya
Pandita spent years preparing for an expedition to the Deadlands. But her
dreams of unearthing ancient artifacts are shattered when her shuttle is buried
by a violent sandstorm, and her team is abducted by the scaled inhabitants of
the planet. Maya and her companions must try to outwit their blue captor and
call for help before they die in the toxic atmosphere.
Sa
Vittaran has a problem in his claws. Along with treasures from the ruins, he
has retrieved three smooth-skinned foreigners. They will die if he leaves them
in the desert. He cannot leave them to die in the desert. Yet the puny
creatures have little value as workers, except perhaps for the impudent woman
who claims to be their leader. Her knowledge of the ancient script will be an
asset if she can survive the long trek to his house.
An
attack by marauders forces Maya and the Blue leader into a wary alliance. They
must work together to thwart the bandits and reunite their company. Can Maya
convince Sa Vittaran to help her team? If she fails, they are doomed to a short
unpleasant life on the desolate, war-torn planet.

Wonderful description! I wonder where they're taking them...
ReplyDeleteThank you. He's riding out of the Deadlands.
Deleteinteresting imagery. I wonder, too, where they're heading.
ReplyDeleteHis steed runs on its two hind legs like T-rex. This one is quite tame and comes when its master's whistles. I thought it was amusing for him to ride off with her.
DeleteEnjoyed the pekron description - you're always so sure handed creating the flora and fauna of your planets. Great snippet!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I like to imagine a range of plants and animals.
DeleteOh, I wanna ride the funky kangaroo! lol Great flash, Aurora. :)
ReplyDeleteYes. Me too, especially with a tall, well-built man.
DeleteGreat description of the pekron. I can almost picture it.
ReplyDeleteAlmost! I'll have to do better next time.
DeleteInteresting animal. Love your world building.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been startling for her. Great description of the animal.
ReplyDeleteYes. This world is full of surprises even though she studied the people before her visit.
