Calming the volcano - snippet from COSMIC LOCK for #WeWriWa

Welcome to another Sunday with Weekend Writing Warriors.

I hope you are healthy and being careful. We are self-isolating since our adult son has mild symptoms. A little light reading can help in these stressful times.

I’m posting snippets from the first chapter of my new story, Cosmic Lock, the 6^th book in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. This series stars Grand Masters Violet Hunter and Athanor Griffin. Their powers include teleporting interstellar distances. On returning from a dangerous venture, they have found their son in Master Stimon’s forge, a cave on the side of an erupting volcano. But, Master Stimon seems mesmerized by the roiling lava and Violet has asked if she can help him.

Th final line was: He shifted on his feet and mumbled, “SHE is enraged and difficult to quieten.”

Realizing he meant the volcano, Violet offered, “Let me alleviate her anger.” She touched the knotted muscles of his upper arm, and exhaled in awe at the tremendous power he kept in check. His mind was linked with the fierce entity at the heart of the magma. She added her coaxing as Stimon urged calm, “Enough; you have destroyed the invaders; cease the blasts lest you destroy the fertile lands at your feet.”  

Catching her purpose from their shared consciousness, Athanor joined in and encouraged the molten metal to cool.

After a final outburst of fiery lava, the thunder faded and the magma receded into the core of the planet. A band of hot ashes settled onto the rim of the rock ledge in front of the forge.

Stimon exhaled a long breath. Stepping back into the forge, he nodded at Violet, “Grand Master, I had not appreciated the potency of your tranquilizing influence. No other being has perceived the volcanic spirit and modulated her rage.”

I hope you are all well and managing to find the supplies you need in this time of crisis. 

I’m posting snippets from the first chapter of my new story, Cosmic Lock, the 6^th book in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. This series stars Violet Hunter and Athanor Griffin, Grand Masters who can teleport interstellar distances. They had left their 13-month old son, Varan, in the care of their old tutor, the White Mother Tingu, while they crossed the Cosmic Rift to rescue some abducted children. But when Violet goes to fetch Varan, she finds Tingu’s cottage in flames and fears her son is dead. She and Athanor have found their son in Master Stimon’s forge, a cave on the side of an erupting volcano.

The final line was: “An eruption induced by its master,” Athanor growled, “We are grateful, Stimon.”

The Master Smith did not respond; he remained at the entrance, wholly focused on the roiling magma. 

“Dada,” Varan tugged on his father’s hair, demanding attention.

Violet passed him to her psychic mate, while Athanor held his son, she went to the entrance to discover why Stimon was silent.

She stood next to the Master Smith, analyzing him with all her senses. Instead of reacting to her psi probe, his eyes were fixed on the blazing explosions in the crater as if he were mesmerized. She followed his gaze. Red streams of lava hissed beyond the entrance, yet the molten rocks arced safely overhead. Sheltered by an overhanging ledge, a skimmer was parked on the flat platform carved in the wall of the crater. 

“Master Stimon,” she said, “can I help?”

He shifted on his feet and mumbled, “SHE is enraged and difficult to quieten.”

Staring at the volcanic magma - Snippet from COSMIC LOCK #SciFi for #WeWriWa

I’m posting snippets from the beginning of my new story, Cosmic Lock, the 6^th book in the Grand Masters’ Galaxy. This series stars Violet Hunter and Athanor Griffin, Grand Masters who can teleport interstellar distances. They had left their 13-month old son, Varan, in the care of their old tutor, the White Mother Tingu, while they crossed the Cosmic Rift to rescue some abducted children. But when Violet goes to fetch Varan, she finds Tingu’s cottage in flames and fears her son is dead. Her partner, Athanor, wakes her from a faint, indicates the unusual volcanic eruption, and suggests they teleport to

Master Stimon’s forge, a cave on the side of the crater.

The final line was: Her spirits brightened; they stood in the Master Smith’s forge and she sensed Varan nearby.

Driven by a joint impulse, she and Athanor swung around to face the exit of the cave. Silhouetted in the livid fires of the eruption, a mismatched trio stood by the arched entrance of the forge. The dwarfish Stimon, white-haired Mother Tingu, and tall, muscular Lizanne, Stimon’s apprentice, were staring at the volcanic magma.

The baby’s wail of, “Mama,” shrilled above the volcano’s thunder.

Lizanne swung around, smiled and eased the toddler onto the ground.

Varan ran to his mother, his arms outstretched for a hug. She lifted him up and Athanor encircled them both in his arms. Their son giggled and grabbed hold of Athanor’s long hair.

Her cheeks red with heat and excitement, Lizanne cried, “The volcano saved us.”

“An eruption induced by its master,” Athanor growled, “We are grateful, Stimon.”

Note: Master Stimon’s forge is a cave on the side of the crater and is fueled by hot lava.

In the last line, Violet says, “Master Stimon’s work?”

“Undoubtedly.” He cupped his hands under her chin and his brilliant sapphire gaze bored into her eyes, “Sweet Violet, you are attuned to the amethyst Varan wears; focus on his gem.”

Gathering her strength for a second attempt, she flung her psi senses into Varan’s small crystal. On seeing red flames and feeling blasts of heat, horror rebounded into her mind and she cried, “I see fire.”

Athanor said, “We’ll port to him.”

“Living or dead,” she whispered.

“Fix the location and I’ll shield us,” he wrapped an arm around her waist and teleported to the site she had pinpointed. 

They emerged on a cool stone floor with the volcano rumbling under their feet. Steel knives and iron pots hung on racks on the wall. Her spirits brightened; they stood in the Master Smith’s forge and she sensed Varan nearby.
