Welcome
to another Saturday of Science Fiction & Fantasy and read snippets
exchanged by several writers. http://scififansat.blogspot.com/
This
week, for a complete change, I’m switching to a snippet from a superhero WIP
set in the fictional university city of Oxenford. Excuse the slightly
nonstandard punctuation to fit into the 15 line limit.
Strolling back to St. Swithin’s,
Diane had her arm through Julian’s, and Estelle followed two paces behind since
the pavement was too narrow for three to walk abreast.
A scream echoed from the stone
walls and Estelle ran toward the noise. She stopped at the intersection,
recognizing the couple at the corner. Professor Philpot was attempting to
pacify the screamer, Betty, the young woman who had been scared to go out after
dark.
Professor Philpot spotted Estelle.
His voice was apologetic, “I offered to escort Betty through the streets. She’s
upset because she thinks she saw a movement in the shadow.”
“I did see a shape climbing up
the wall. Right up a vertical wall,” Betty’s voice was shrill with indignation.
She pointed a shaking finger at the church on the opposite side of the street,
“Over there.”
Diane and Julian raced round
the corner. “What’s going on?” Julian exclaimed.
“There!” Betty’s shrill scream
pierced their ears.
A dark form, like the elongated
figure of a man, clambered over the arched entrance to the church.
What do you think?

Book 3 in the Grand Master's Trilogy will be ready for release soon. I have a cover:
Intriguing! Superheroes in Oxford - sorry, Oxenford. We're used to seeing superheroes in big cities, but the dreaming spires are more usually troubled by magic and horror - this has a somewhat different feel that could work really well. I'm looking forward to seeing some more.
ReplyDeleteWell it has horror and of course superheroes are sort of magic.
