Happy Mother’s Day!
If you enjoy Science Fiction and Fantasy, look at the Super Sale at the end of this post.
My story has no scenes to
celebrate motherhood, so I’ll give you another glimpse of Toby. You remember
Toby – the tough with the tattoo of a black cat leaping up his biceps. Estelle met
him over the summer and heard his voice when she was pinned in a weird
cylinder. (Some
creative punctuation to fit.)
Scanning the other students,
Diane nudged Estelle and nodded towards the Engineering building on the other
side of the lawn, “Look at that hunk!”
Following Diane’s gaze, Estelle
inhaled sharply; Toby! Running down the steps from the entrance, his black garb
and powerful build stuck out among the nerdy crowd of engineering students. He
strode across the lawn in their direction. Blushing, Estelle said, “I’ve met
him; he rode a motorbike on the trails near my uncle’s farm.”
Diane said, “With muscles like that, he must lift weights or
wrestle. Come on, let’s say hello.” Tugging on Estelle’s hand, Diane stepped
off the path and angled towards Toby. After a second of hesitation, curiosity
bit Estelle. What was Toby doing at Goldman University?

Teen
superhero, Starrella, and her flying horse tackle villains in the skies of
Atalanta.
The
quiet summer before her freshman year turns frighteningly weird after Estelle
Wright trespasses onto an Army base. Blown into the air and knocked
unconscious, she wakes with a nascent superpower. Not to mention a winged horse
with a snarky attitude and a mind of her own.
Back
home in Atalanta, a serial killer is targeting the students at Goldman
University. Before long she must juggle college classes with sneaking out of
the house after dark to battle alien monsters. Estelle’s life is in danger, but
who can she trust: handsome Captain Copper from military intelligence, or hunky
Toby, the tough gangster with a motorbike? Both men have secret agendas, but
falling in love is not in their plans.
Young
adult superheroes, quirky animal sidekicks, and a dash of romance enliven this thrilling
adventure. Book 1 of the Secret Supers.

Ah, young lust...what fun! Interesting snippet.
ReplyDeleteAlso, a man of mystery.
DeleteSo nice to see a familiar face. Good snippet, Aurora. :)
ReplyDeletePerhaps!
DeleteWell I hope he's there to be her side-kick! Or her boyfriend?
ReplyDeleteBut who is he really? Estelle last heard his voice when she was pinned in a weird cylinder.
DeleteA coincidence? Or maybe not??
ReplyDeleteExactly!
DeleteBrains behind the brawn perhaps? Or maybe he has some other reason to be there.
ReplyDeleteBoth are correct.
DeleteIn this situation, she'd be very curious indeed.
ReplyDeleteYes, she needs to know what's going on.
DeleteFun. Love how she describes him.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteI bet he's keeping an eye on her, and we won't find out why till something big happens and maybe he has to pull her out of trouble. Looking forward to more, as always!
ReplyDeleteHe is certainly keeping an eye on her. But she has already found the "trouble".
DeleteMaybe he is on a surveillance mission, who knows. So who is going to get the boy, lol.
ReplyDeleteHe is certainly more than he appears on the surface.
DeleteSuch a coincidence! Or not....interesting development. I just bet he stands out at that school! Enjoyed the snippet...
ReplyDeleteHe would stand out at ours.
DeleteWhile one girl is in 'lovestruck' mode, the other is confused and wondering. Nice juxtaposition.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed the 'nerdy engineering students' line, because it reminded me of #3 son, an engineer (now an urban planner) -- 6'5" and one of several fitness fanatics in his engineering class.
Yes, that's Toby!
DeleteA hunky engineer? Right up my alley. ;-)
ReplyDelete~Joyce Scarbrough
Yeah! Estelle needs answers from him.
DeleteYeah, what is he doing there?
ReplyDeleteExactly what Estelle is asking.
DeleteYou can be brawny and brainy at the same time.
ReplyDeleteHe is, among other things.
DeleteI don't know why Toby is there... but I hope to see more of him! ;)
ReplyDeleteEstelle learns more about him gradually as events unfold. Eventually, she is bugging him for answers.
DeleteLovely snippet ... her new sidekick ??
ReplyDeleteIt's more complicated, although you can guess where the story is heading.
DeleteMy guess is he's looking for her. :-)
